Series 2 heater box replacement?

Now the series 2 is back together I just need to get the heater pipes back where they should be. i.e on the heater matrix and not bypassed.
Its got the original smiths round in cab heater which has a serious leak, replacement matrix units are stupid money so just wondering is there a cheaper alternative that would fit in the cab?
I don't really care if its a landrover part or not but I would like it in the cab cos I really don't want to chop the bulkhead about any more than I already have (to fit series 3 servo pedalbox). I've got an old defender one but its really a bit big!

You could fit the defender one under the bonnet on the passenger footwell as per series 3.

Search e-bay for taxi heaters - They vary so you need to look at where the pipes come out.
I would be trying to find the leak and solder it up. A faff but cheap!

I thought of trying to repair the old one but it looks brass not copper and I can't get it hot enough to solder.

See if you can get it clean by washing it, perhaps in a mild acid. Then you should be able to solder it with a decent size blowlamp but be ready with a damp rag if the rest of it looks like falling apart! If you can get it clean and if the leak is in the matrix you can fill up one section with solder or Araldite but it must be clean. At £200+ for a new one its worth go.

I think the hole is quite isolated (on the first or second coil down in one spot) but the fins are rusted to bits, are you saying drill a hole in the dodgy section and fill it with something?

You find the section with the hole and fill the air passage around if full - thinking about it I think they use plastic metal. So you lose one or two air passages but overall it doesn't make a lot of difference.

Search for T7 heaters not period but efficient.

Or perhaps something like this could be made to fit?

that particular one doesn't have a matrix in it but you might find another one on ebay/mini breakers/scrapyard.
I agree that having a go at repairing yours is the way to go initially.

I fitted an electric fan to a brand new radiator (badly).
The movement in the fan cut holes in the new aluminium radiator. Naturally this let go just as I absolutely needed the car the next day. Now it was new so needed very little cleaning up with wen n dry but in desperation I spotted superglue round the holes and sprinkled baking soda before it dried. Repeated until each hole was filled I preyed it would last the pending journey.

That was a couple of years ago. Still good, used daily.
