Speakers

As I am currently in the process of rebuilding my 90, one thing I would like to do is change the roof headlining to a later type. My speakers used to be housed in the roof headlining and sound was absolute crap. Any bass would be instantly lost. I am reluctant to cut holes into the new headlining so I was thinking of fitting aftermarket speakers in the original location provided by Land Rover. I am aware of the fact that original speakers were so crappy due to the very limited space available so I shall purchase spacers. I have the following questions:

1. What depth of spacers shall I use?
2. What's the speaker diameter?
3. Is there any other place that can be used to fit speakers?

I'm not looking for anything out of this world, just some decent sound that can drown a 300 tdi

If you want any sort of bass in a Defender you'll have to fit something more than the standard sized speakers imo. 6x9s at a minimum, possibly even amplified if you're going to try and use just them. Obviously these won't sit in the standard position.

The Defender is a big space to fill with sound and it would depend on what cab you have. A 90 pickup will require a lot less power/speakers than a 90 station wagon for example.

I bought a set from eBay which had speakers and spacers, which are ok if you just want to hear music. But there are other speakers to provide a bit more sound.

If you’re wanting more sound in the front, why not fit a roof console and fit speakers to that.
4 inch speakers fit just right and give good sound. Attached is a photo of mine!

As I said, I'm not looking for anything special but my current setup just sounds too tinny and not being able to hear a bass guitar gets to me.

My advice would be to get a sub if you're looking for better low frequencies, any full range is going to struggle mounted in a landy unless a specific housing is made

I've found a set of smallish surround sound speakers works well - bolted to little home made brackets on the roof channel above and behind the seats, firing forwards.

Apline sub. Cost about £150 bolts onto the back of the cubby box nice punchy bass.

The console is in three parts, the middle section first is held up with tree fixings I think they’re called, however the middle one is most secure as there is a roof support directly above it. The two side sections are held up with the screws for the sun visors and three screws along the top of the door pillar then a tree fixing in the center. Can bit a bit fiddly to do, but well worth it! The space I’ve put my speakers is just big enough for 4” speakers, you have to cut out a hole in the roof lining for the speaker to sit into, but only as big as the magnet on the back of them!
