Hi guys hopeully I will find someone that can help me. Really Struggles to start if fuel is less than half a tank. Can hear fuel pump whining but cant if above half. I have changed so much as suggested from members on here but still the same.
Fuel pump replaced for new aftermarket and now second hand genuine
New fuel pressure regulator
New genuine fuel filter housing with genuine filter and genuine valve
Injector seals done
Injector loom done
Ecu clean (never had oil in it)

After spending a small fortune on this one problem I'm not giving up now. Anyone had this problem before and know how to fix it? Thanks

does car run and drive normally when started even if under half full? if so I would think it is air getting in the system for some reason if you stop when under half full and try to restart straight away will it restart okay if so air has not had time to enter. Do not know why but maybe when tank is low air is getting in and the fuel is dropping back into tank but when higher the head of the tank is stopping it going back so far so car will start, try purging the system before starting can not remember off hand how but think you need to turn ignition on so pump runs about six times

Ian it' doing everything that you have explained. The trouble is where is there air coming in. I can' sit there and purge it every ime that' not practical and not a fix. Like I say its exactly what you say thou word for word
Discovery Devon why would it be injectors if below half

Hi Ryan It could be getting in any where but would think it is more likely in the engine bay as if it is at filter or tank as it is lower fuel would leak out before air got in and you could see that around tank and pump, I would check pressure regulator, did you fit new gasket, and is the o ring okay and in place other than that go around checking all is tight and watch engine when running to see if you have any small leaks as these will let air in when not running

hi Ryan just found a thread on this problem on landy zone" td5 fuel pressure problems "might be good to look at that, it was begining 2011 I think , not very good at computers so can not do link but could google and should come up

Okay thanks Ian I will try and find it. It' so annying now just want it fixed don't even care how much it will cost. When I don' the FPR I changed the metal gasket and the o rings as come as a kit but there's a mesh type gorse thing that goes in the engine and that looked like it's been snapped in half I wonder if that will have anything to do with it. It shouldn't as this end is mint and sealed the broken end is inside the engine but just looks like a gorse to stop big fragments

Hi Ryan I see you found thread all seem to have same problem as you I think I would check non return valve again as if it is the seals on the injectors as it is the highest point in system if a small amount of air gets in it should be sent out when fuel pump starts if you just turn ignition on and wait for 15 seconds before trying to start it most air should be gone and you may have to crank engine slightly more than normal but should start, long term the seals will need to be replaced. If the non return valve is not working and there is air getting in say at the injectors the air coming in allows the fuel to fall back into tank when the tank is lower,
It seams from the thread not all td5 have non return valves but not sure about that but think if no air getting in system a non return valve is not needed but valve acts to stop fuel dropping if air does get in,
would also double check seal on fuel filter as is easy to do

Do not think this is the problem but if the bits have gone inside fuel system will not do injectors a lot of good if they find there way there, I hope bits have dropped off as you took old regulator off

Thank you so much for your help Ian. I will put another fuel filter on to see if it' that and I'll order a new non return valve and air bleed valve see if that's any better. I'l Keep posted thanks again I'll be back in a few days

I saw a thread years ago on another forum and it turned out to be injectors, you can send them off to be tested though

I would think that when they changed the injectors they also changed the seals and would think that that was the problem air was getting in fuel system, but I could be wrong I often am
