when was the last time it had a service , has the map cleaner been cleaned out
due to them being electronic heavy is always best to get them plugged into a diagnostic reader, that way u can see what codes come up , there are endless reasons why it may not be performing as it useto be
but as it's an ejoke if all else fails , then burn it,

Hi thanks for your reply .it's had a service with an independent garage .I don't think they would have cleaned the map cleaner .I'm going to check if it's still under warranty .would using a diesel treatment help like diesel forte.i do short runs to my work .could this be the problem

Getting 'er plugged in and checking for codes, may be old 'sorted' ones to get deleted off if nothing else gives you a clean slate to work with.
Not an engine I know anything about (I generally actually don't know anything to be fair) - but taking it for a good long run up the motorway isn't a bad shout if all you are doing it stop start on off with it. This may not cure your problem etc but it'll allow everything to get up to good working temps and clear out the cobwebs a bit.
Report back with your findings on the reader (Invest in one for yourself, the first time you plug it in and give us the codes it'll pay for itself) as sometimes it'll throw a code or 2 about something but be related to something else. As an example I had bank 1 and bank 2 lamba sensor failure codes pop up on my BMW but this was unreasonable to have both fail just overnight like that. The error popped up because the air intake developed a split so the computer was reading crazy air in and pressure readings. They're not failsafe items by any means but it'll get you a load further than you are now.

as mentioned is a good idea to give them a good clear out once in a while , mines a 2.7 V6 and also give mine a good clear out as once in a while
the map sensor are one of the favourite things to block up , they need to be removed and cleaned out ,
i personally use millers cleaner
indeed gettting the codes is the way to go, i like many others bought my own, bought one made by Gap and called an iid , they are around £420 but will tell u in great detail of all the systems inc live data
as also mentioned get them all cleared, then see what comes back up
if it's still under warranty get it booked in with them, also ask for a full code print out, before and after they are cleared and get them to check the live data , as this will also test ur map sensor, egrs , injectors etc
