My series 3 has developed a loud clunk when I turn sharp right such as on a roundabout. Just one loud clunk from the rear I thought it was something moving in the tool box I was carrying but that was removed this week for the MOT. Passed MOT but still have the loud noise only when I turn right. Cannot see anything loose or moving, any ideas??

Could be a number of things but start with loose axle to spring U bolts and the spring eyes themselves although I would have thought the MOT guy would have picked that up.

I'd be looking at spring bushes - possibly on the left side as the suspension unloads on right turns but you would have hoped an MOT inspector would have spotted it. Look for worn bushes, worn pins and ovalled holes in the spring hangers. Unless the exhaust mounts are burgered and it's letting the exhaust knock on the chassis.

I thought that as well and should have said had pry bar on springs and shackles and exhaust no sign of movement (wear). Going to try more things in the b next day or so.

Could it possibly be wear in the rear diff or drive shafts. As you turn, drive will be transmitted to the wheel with the most grip, i.e. the rear left when turning right. Also check tightness of rear wheel nuts but it is a bit unlikely that it is this. Although, years ago a family member complained of a clunking noise when turning. I took their car to my house to investigate and on the way a wheel fell off.
