Disco 2 Fan / viscous coupling query?!

Hi all

Last week the clutch came off the a/c compressor on our td5 discovery. It has now been dealt with but when it came off it hit the fan and broke one of the blades.

The garage would like to replace the fan but have quoted parts of £175. I'm guessing (awaiting conformation) this means they are intending to replace the fan complete with viscous coupling.

It seems to me like I could buy a second hand fan for £30 and just swap out the old one (retaining the viscous coupling.) Which would save a load of money! Or am I missing something? Is it wise to change the VC? The car has done 125k miles.

Any input much appreciated.

Makes sense to me, if it's just the blade and the bearing in the fan coupling is fine, then why change it, should save a few quid.

When my one went, it was shredding the fan belt slightly, and it could be heard slightly on tick over with engine lid open. I was not able to wobble it when fitted to the car, but with the coupling off, with fan blade still fitted, I put it in a vice and was clearly able to see and feel a slight wobble when moving it, if that makes sense.

We have a D2 V8 fan without viscous coupling here, I think it's the same for the TD5?

In my experience the viscous coupling part of the fan just doesn't work properly - never had one that performs proper free spin when cold.

For that cost consider an electric fan conversion, or if you're anywhere near Basingstoke Hampshire feel free to grab a freebie entire fan and coupling assembly from me, saves me binning it.
