Front Runner Bonnet Mount Spare Wheel TD5

Hi, I'm looking to mount my spare on the bonnet of my 300tdi 110. Can't find a decent mounting kit for a decent price anywhere!! Any pics would be great to see. Where can you get one for £100??
 
Yep that's the one. None in Europe currently though apparently according to Front Runner. I'm just nervous about impact on a flimsy TD5 bonnet.
 

Why would you want to spend £100 ? You could make one fairly easily out of a steel wheel rim from a car. Split the rim in two and trim off the part that holds the tyre bead in place so the remainder of the rim will fit inside your spare wheel. Drill it around the edge so that you can bolt it to the bonnet. with adequate re-inforcing on the underside of the bonnet. Weld 3 long bolts to the cut down rim so that they line up with 3 stud holes in your spare wheel.
Cut a steel plate to go under the nuts that you will fit to hold the wheel onto the new mounting.
While you have the welder handy, weld a bar or steel loop on the mounting to take a padlock. Fit 4 suitable rubber pads on the bonnet, spaced out so they will support the spare wheel on the side of it's tyre.
Or......if you are lucky enough to source a scrap Series II or III deluxe dished bonnet complete with it's spare wheel mount, you could fit that mounting. I had one of these on my Series III.
Before you even start, have you driven a Land Rover with a bonnet mounted wheel ? If not, try placing your spare wheel on the bonnet now so that you can get an idea of what it's like to lift a wheel on and off: and also to see how much it might restrict your vision. And remember whenever you open the bonnet.... you will be lifting the spare wheel as well !

I would be a bit wary of fitting bonnet spare on TD5 , as they were not an option due to engine , bonnet clearance AFAIK

Haven't the skill for all that I'm sad to say. I have a 90 with a bonnet spare wheel which I had fitted last year (300 TDI) so happy with the practicalities of vision and lifting bonnet.
 
these will work just as well , whichever you use dontforget to brace underbonnet , using a earlier bonnet with it all done is probably easier course, as they sit higher with a td5 because of the hump , repeat my clearance caveat tho .
 
I had a S111 with a bonnet mounted 600 section spare tyre, that was difficult to get on and off, was a pain to lift the bonnet and compromised forward visibility. I really would not want to repeat the exercise with the 235/85/R16 and alloy on my 90.

from experience a 265/75 is about as wide as you can go on a defender bonnet (dished type) without a view compromise , depending on if you are height challenged :)
 
You lot must be weak as I have a 7.5x16 Michelin xzl on a genuine wolf xd rim and I can both open the bonnet and lift it on and off with no particular problems. And I am a 90kg 6ft normal guy who eats bad and doesn't go to the gym
