just coming home on the motorway and all of a sudden heard a high pitched whistling noise from behind the dash? tried the heater hot an cold all directions it was fine so i pulled over and tried the suspension up and down it was fine so i turned off the ignition and after about 20 seconds the whistle came to a reducing stop. started up it was fine no whistle. any ideas?

I would suspect it is your centre aircon vents. They are controlled by the blue/red dial. Trying cycling the feet/face/screen buttons. It could be they are just getting a bit sticky and not opening the vents behind the facia fully.

Adjust the fan speed next time, try switching it off see if the noise goes.
Not un-Common for the interior fan to make strange noises.

Consider low aircon refrigerant.

I had a (really) high pitched whistling from behind the dash. Dogs and those with young ears could hear it.

It was the pressure reducing valve for the aircon, caused by low refrigerant, caused by a pin hole in the aircon condenser releasing my precious refrigerant to the atmosphere.

This was on a P38, but the effect might be the same.

at the time when the wistle started the fan was off aircon was off. i turned them on to all positions and temperatures and it made no difference. it even carried on when the engine was switched off

i have had trouble with the air con in the past. i have recently replaced the condenser. i tried the air con on the rest of the journey and it worked fine freezing infact

The HEVAC control unit has a small fan in the fascia that draw cabin air over a small sensor.....these small fans run on few a few minutes on engine and ignition off.....
They have been known to get noisy if there is fluff or dust caught in it.
