Not sure if this is the right place.
Taxed old car on 5/1/15, 6 months = £145.75
Sold car on 25/1/15, so 5 months left on tax.
Got refund today, £88.33
Someone able to help me with the maths

Was a similar story on here the other day, think the advice was simply to phone the DVLA. They only refund full months. Sold my disco last August and got exactly what I was owed.

Cheers.
I always like to get as much info before so I'll have some idea if I'm getting gobblygook or fact.

If you sold it on the 25th that was a Sunday. Did you post it back on that day or did you leave it a few days. It will have taken a day or two in the post. 31st was a Saturday and I doubt they will have been processing it.
If they received the refund request after the 1st day of Feb they have charged you 2 months and handling fee. This is 10% I think. Which is the price you have been given back ( just about)

What would he post back? If he bought tax in jan it would have all been online. When I last got refunded tax I had to return a disc but thought it would be more simple now.

My understanding so far is that if it is a 6 month tax then you don't get that 10% surcharge back.
V5c was posted 1st class on the 26th. I agree that post and processing could take it past the 1st of Feb but on V5c it has the date vehicle was sold and surely that "should" be the date they use.
Going to phone today, I'll let you know

Well how bizarre.
Whilst looking on DVLA for contact number I noted that it says refund is calculated from date of sale, for me 25th, so that's good me thinks.
Then after going through all the automated options you get to refunds and the auto voice says, " if you disagree with the amount, cash the cheque, then write a letter to refund dept at ......".
Funny how they have automated the whole system and you can talk to an advisor......except for refunds

Figures are worked out in the twelve mth increments so you lose surcharge as previously said, if going for refund it's better to have a 12 mth disc, you get more of your hard earned back.

They want letters because they don't get the tone and venom behind the swearing and threats in the written word than they would when being said over the phone.

Let us know how they have worked it out.

Will do, I guess it could be some time for them to process and reply.
I guess they must be really worried about trees, no more tax discs or reminders and refund is a tiny cheque in tiny envelope and no breakdown of their calculation.

Just an update.
Just had reply from DVLA, that's 5 weeks.
Posted V5c 1st class 26th Jan, was processed 4th Feb, so lost the month of Feb.
Typical rip off as the delay was not with the post but their processing dept.
So the lesson, send early and recorded delivery.

So contest it - if it states on their site that refunds are based on the date of sale of the vehicle, then, their internal processing times are irrlevant.

They want to fob you off to take more money from you than they are entitled to, on the basis that most people won't fight it.
