Hi all, i am halfway through a rebuild of my 1994 300tdi 90 and it has ground to a halt. I got it about 3 years ago and then while looking for my first job after uni decided to take it to bits and rebuild it. that was about 8 months ago. it is now sat in my in-laws garage stripped back to the chassis. the problem is i don't really get the time to work on it, especially with it not even being stored at my house. (can currently be doing 12 hour days 7 days a week)

to make things worse the missus has now decided she doesn't really feel safe in it and would prefer a discovery (or if i can find a cheap enough newer defender). i have no idea why, its only had a few minor faults:
--power steering system sprang a leak and lost all fluids in about a minute driving through heavy traffic
--pulley fell off so the belt came off on the motorway = loss of steering and cooling blowing the hose off the radiator (luckily had jerry cans of water to get me to a garage)
--accelerator stuck on in heavy traffic sending me speeding down the high street (the little plastic grommet that goes through the bulkhead got jammed)

so my question is - if i strip and sell it in bits roughly what is the return (all straight panels, great engine, no headlining or original seats, chassis tidy)?

also, what do i have to do regarding selling chassis, engine etc and informing the dvla?

and finally, if i got a 300tdi discovery - which bits are worth saving from my 300tdi 90 for future repairs/improvements?

cheers guys

make it all work and drive it, i had the same dillema and i am now restoring it so i can drive it in about 6 months
Kind regards, Sytse

Breaking it will take longer to sell than putting it back together. Why not use a couple of days holiday and fix it?

Once it's back together you can then decide which one you want

My words of advise as I've had both.
Don't buy a Disco cos you'll be spending all your time welding it up & repairing it.
With a Defender you'll only need to repair it.

I have always found disco's boring meaning they are too reliable so if you are lucky like I was and get one that doesn't need welding you will be bored to tear's, its funny whilst we was getting my 90 out of the garage today after spending a few days working on it my son said to me I have missed messing about with a landy, he was refering to when I had a s11a /111 years ago then moved over to disco's but have just moved over to defender's which are more or less the same as series but better :D

don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Discos rot terrible, mate had one a tidy looking 98 v8, the nearside chassis rail bottom rotted and and the chassis cracked right up the outside, this was on the uphill bit in front of the axle, the sills were on their way also body to chassis mounts, they are all the same, wont be long and a 300 disco will be a rare sight on the roads.
Remind your missis that under the skin they are the same car, ie they are both bags of crap!

Discos can look great but year for year underneath it will be worse than a defender. Its easy to be tempted but even newer ones rot, wheelarches, boot floor, rear crossmember etc.

between the resounding NO!'s on here and the fact my insurance would triple i think ive convinced her to give it another chance - so now i need to batter the rebuild and finish in time for a trip round scotland in the summer.

the only reason i even considered getting a disco is that the 90 needs q plating before it goes back on the road - but ive started another thread asking for advice on that one.

cheers for the rust warnings - patching my chassis was trouble enough - dont fancy having to patch a rusty body too.

thanks
ben
