confused about oil

Well I have searched but still not got the answer
I noticed Halfrauds are selling oil at £10 for 4 litres so as mine is about due and the wifes is about due for a oil change I went in about to buy some and the "kind" man said what is it for ,so he had my reg number of me and said 10-40s for mine a 2006 td4 auto hse and same for the wife's 1800 98 model , but I said I am sure it is 5-30s for mine and I knew my old td4 was 10-40s but in Haynes is said 5-30 for my newer one and a old Haynes said 10-40s for my old one , so Landy men out there what is the correct one 10-40s or 5-30s my old freelander was a 2001 td4 auto gs

This has been beat to death............ You ask 10 different people and you will get 10 different answers. Did you look in the owners manual? Don't do cheap with oil. That is your best maintenance tool for your motor.

The user manual is not right for my 2000 TD4 as it has 10w-40 for the oil & 26 psi for the tyre pressures ( which should be 30 psi as printed in newer manual )
The Halfords oil search states 10w-40 semi for my TD4 but other sites searches come back with 5w-30 fully ( Castrol , opieoils ,mobile )
I have always used fully synthetic oil in 5w-30 grade ( you can use 5w-40 )

The £10 Halfords stuff is made by comma , Is it cheap for a reason :scratching_chin:

I personally don't like a 5/30 as I don't feel it offers decent bearing protection at higher engine temperatures and loads. I recon car manufacturers recommend these thin oils for fuel economy reasons. I always use a quality semi 10/40.

Nowt wrong with comma oils

comma oil has been going for years and years in fact I have used it many times before I have looked in owners Manuel and it does not say what grade either that or I am going blind more than likely

10-40 semi synthetic will be fine, fully synthetic is an overkill. I always do an oil & filter change around 5000 miles (Used to be 3000 on my P38,V8) despite what the book or RAVE says. I would never run a car for 12000 miles between oil changes-especially a diesel. Likewise I agree with the comment posted about the use of 5-40 oil it's all part of the "Economy" selling point because it gives an extra 0.002 mpg.
No problem with Comma or any other oil as long as it meets the API spec's in the book.
Castrol and a few others is a big con, they have craftily reduced the size of the container from 4.5 litres to 4 lits yet still charge top dollar and you need to buy two cans for an oil change on most cars.
Best bet is to shop around for the best deal.

The grade of oil you use is dependent on the climate you live in, explains it all in the handbook.
10w40 or 5w30 is ok for the UK.

BMW stopped using the old M47 engine in 2001 though it was fitted in the FL until 2006.

thanks men just been and brought 16 ltrs of semi synthetic 10-40s for £40 if I buy another one it will do for another oil change on both ,yet the same oil in the 5 ltr form cost £28, can you believe that also got the oil filter for both .

Been using a quality 10/40 in the td4 engine for a few years now and still going strong!

Check the price of 30 ltr drums at a good motor factors.
When we lived in Ireland I used to pay €65 incl. VAT for a 30 ltr drum of Valvoline 10-40 semi synthetic...that was in 2012.

For the same price I would have got the Halfords 5w-40 fully syth for the TD4

Why your temps are not cold enough for 5w40........ that arctic oil

I've always used comma as well never any probs.

I used it in my old TD4 and there was no problem with that it had 176000 on the clock when we parted.

At a tenner for 4 litres it's a bit of a no brainer, hence I found myself in my local Halfords earlier…

I use 10w 40 semi synthetic in my TD4. At the last change I used Castrol Magnatec which I bought when it was on offer at Halfords, £17.50/4l

you cant go wrong if you buy online at eurocarparts just type in your reg and it gives you a choice of oils and more parts for your car .easy if you don't know, hope this helps

Opie Oils (Engine Oil, Motor Oil and Car Engine Oils from the largest UK independent online supplier of Performance Oils) is a pretty good supplier too.

I put 10w40 Castrol magnetic in ma v6 engine. LR main dealer put 5w30 in when they previously serviced it. I'm sticking with 10w40 CM as I bought loads when it was cheap.

as long as the oil has an API or ACEA number and you get the correct petrol or diesel type you will be fine Ive noticed some of the really cheap oils (asda smartprice types) don't have these numbers so I would avoid. The 5w30 oils are for more modern engines not really anything to do with mpg, more to do with making sure the oil is thin enough when it's cold to supply the hydraulic followers and other systems such as the variable valve timing etc
