Dream the impossible dream or how to stop a V8 oil sump from leaking?

Ok - I have a 1997 V8 4.00 GEMS (Disco I 97 NAS) and I used all the spec material, including a Land Rover original part cork gasket, to fix my oil-sump leak; it worked for about a year, maybe less, and now the leak is back with a vengeance. Now, I have heard that some owners simply bin the...

    My 4.6 V8 build

Many thanks for this excellent rebuild picture story; and the exhaust sounds fantastic! BTW - any idea on what sort of hp & torque she is developing now?

    4.0 Mass Air Flow Sensor

I had the same thing happen a couple of years back on my 4.00 and I hate to say it but it turned out to be a bogus MAF.

    Disco 1 Interesting steering issue

I will let you guys know how things work-out as I proceed with this bushing replacement work and, if any, what pitfalls to look out for when its time on for such work on your own Landies. This will take a bit however as I am also finishing up a total overhaul on the multi-function trailer my...

    Disco 1 Interesting steering issue

Thanks Zuggy - will do on that geometry. BTW - I have only done that front Panhard and it already made a difference but I know the rest have to be done to - however - I had to go buy a press as paying the local garage for merely pushing in bushings was downright highway robbery: i.e., two...

    Disco 1 Interesting steering issue

You guys are terrific! Thanks for all the helpful input as the bushes in question (as per your posts) all look way "too-long-in-the-tooth" as they are shrunken and battered. I have stared at them many a time when under the vehicle for various reasons and it never occurred to me to check them...

    Disco 1 Interesting steering issue

Hi Paul; They are all good to go but, as I have said, those bushes (fore and aft) are looking bad and in serious need of replacement.

    Disco 1 Interesting steering issue

The bushes theme continues and so I will check it out; many thanks for your help. No; they are good but, as per the consensus of posts here, other bushings are looking a lot worse for wear. I will replace them a let you guys know what that accomplished. Thanks for the input all the same!

    Disco 1 Interesting steering issue

Will do; although I did have that problem a few years back and replaced those bushes and welded up a trailing arm as it had broken away from its factory 'moorings.' But, I think its worth an investigation.

    Disco 1 Interesting steering issue

I have been noticing a definite need for my Disco I to start drifting, rather nastily, at highway speeds (i.e., 60 mph) when I take my foot off the accelerator (no brake applied) - in other words - during deceleration. Now, I have had a leaking steering box for several years and I just kept...

    1995 Discovery 3.9 V9 engine ticking noise

Why not check from the bottom? After all - its easier to remove the oild pan than take the heads down

Fett - what exactly does a worn rocker arm sound like? Does it tick, knock, rattle?

    Overheating v8

Correction to last - I had assumed you had just had the work done whereas it appears that may not be the case (my apologies as I think I confused you with another member who was having similar problems). A leak-down test will still tell you if the head-gasket has decided to pack-it-in between...
