This is my7 1997 Defender 300 tdi engine
It's origional, and I'm building a new cylinder head for it as the gaskets gone on cyl no 3. I've poeted and polished it and modified the valves to to improve flow and efficiency. But yours looks like a 300tdi, the disco has some ancillary differances...

Peggy the farmy pick-up did seem a little quicker than I was expecting. Out accelerating a 2018 transit to 80 up a hill on the duel carriageway. I believe it has the same engine as the last Defenders, and they may have had some load, so it means nothing really.
I attributed this to her being the...

Thats an intake bowl, behind the valve

I forgot to mention, I was using a very small grinding stone on the pencil air die grinder, with wd 409 which stopped the stone clogging with Alu.
You can see all the ****e sticking oot better in this pic.
There is also minimal machining from the fitting of valve seat inserts, and the most...

Yes, as in first pic. But it's not easy to see.

I would keep the galv finish, if it looks good. You can clear coat then make it flat.
Just going to get pics of my 88 sear box which I rebuilt recently.

I gave them a shout but they have not come back to me, so they may not be making them anymore 😭.
Maybe I buy old ones and make my own, if I can get my TIG working properly 🤣
-
I bought a replacement head and sold the original.
It made sense to start afresh, 27 years slightly pitted valve seats and leaky stems; the original would have cost as much to have to have a head shop refurbish the old one. Also the crud from EGR was just nasty on the back of inlet valves...

The 300 TDI is a direct injection engine, so there is no fuel in the inlet ports and the directly injected diesel mixes inside a small bowl inside the piston.
-
That's a great idea,
Thanks I'll contact them and ask 👍

When I seen all the craggy intrusions from casting on the otherwise shiny new head, I figured it was the perfect opportunity to remove the intrusions into and smooth out the ports. Since it's direct injection the fuel mixing in the piston, allows for the inlet ports to be polished too.
I have...

Have you ever wondered why it's always cylinder no 3 that blows the head gasket.
I would like to make one of these or buy one, but cannot find any available. So may buy a couple of old inlet manifolds and see if my Aluminium welding is good enough 🤣
Have a new head and gas flowing and polishing...
