Hi all! My brother is swapping the engine in RRC from 1991 (model year is 1992 I think) from 3.9 V8 to 300TDI. There is one connector left from the old harness that we have no clue about - where it should go on what it is for. Any ideas?

Small update. You were right from the beginning - I should've bought another alternator ;) I changed the bearings and then realized that the rotor is touching the stator as it rotates... I will buy an alternator from 300TDI and do a swap. I heard it's just a matter of replacing the pulley. Thank...

Just one question out of curiosity. How could the winding break just like that? I guess it was soldered poorly?

I did the diode test with the alternator off and they seem to be fine - above 500 in one direction (multimeter's black wire touching alternator's B+ and multimeter's red wire touching alternator's body) and no value in the other direction (wires swapped).
