Aren’t the two heavier brown cables connected at alternator and on same terminal on solenoid.
-
Charging circuit similar to this
-
Looks like your charge light lead is ok, think it does need that exciter voltage to get charging
Can you crimp in those big connectors a bit to get a tighter fit on the spade terminals also do this on the small one to make sure .
You will have checked the belt tension by now, giving about 3/4”...

I’ve seen on here this choice of supplier and they export

Stag88 last seen in 22, when you flushed rad did water come out as quick as going in, if so unlikely blocked have you checked the thermostat is opening in hot water
-
And does the red light stay on when running , have you measured voltage on battery when engine running
Have you got 12v on the thin lead when it’s disconnected from alternator , red bulb should come on when you earth the thin lead
-
Think my earth to engine goes via the battery box as in pic, I don’t think your proposal will have as good a connection due to paint will need to be removed from radiator and front panel where connections are and also where front panel mounts to chassis and these screws are only quite small...
-
I would add a second earth strap to the chassis from engine if not got one already as the engine and gearbox sits on rubber mounts

No doubt someone has had the same problem

Looking at the manual, the trunnions and bushes are lubed with general purpose grease and the pedal, shaft that has the end plug in is removed and filled with sae 20 oil and reassembled
-
That’s clever does it ever cut in, where did you buy it from , just wired in a manual switch for mine
-
-
I dont think i bought any extra hoses, this would have been made up with what was on the 2286 and the tdi , cant remember if i needed to cut one
-
Manuals here that will help apart from engine and other mods different on the lightweight

I would try not to farm out too much work as you will miss out on the learning and understanding of how bits work best spend the money on new tools required

Welcome, Nice looking motor, the vice could come in handy , do you lose much oil out the air filter 🤔
