Would valve stem oil seals make it miss as well as smoke????????

Hi I have a 200 tdi defender 90. when I start it from cold it misses and smokes like mad, it lasts for about 5 minutes and then runs like a dream with no smoke and doesn't appear to be missing - any ideas??? Cheers
