2002 disco TD5 auto: auto problem? oil?

Thanks Dave. Sounds like it would be worth me draining/replacing the first 4.5 litres and deciding on the strength of the appearance of the first drained lot whether to go straight on to do again after a few hundred km.

2002 disco TD5 auto: auto problem? oil?

Looks absolutely normal to me. The rev drop when it locks into fourth is exactly as I described on mine. Oil residue - looks much cleaner overall than mine, which has always had oil everywhere. :)

2002 disco TD5 auto: auto problem? oil?

Yes the box is sophisticated, and yes there are lots of possible faults which can be shown by lights, fault codes etc. But I don't think that's a reason to worry. Re. the original post: Are there any fault lights on? No Any odd behaviour? The OP thought so, but I think will have been reassured...

2002 disco TD5 auto: auto problem? oil?

Your could try Torque converter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which explains well the behaviour when stationary, accelerating, and the lock-up possible when cruising.

2002 disco TD5 auto: auto problem? oil?

Fear you may be right mate. The failure to pull away with a light throttle doesn't sound at all like mine. If I am sitting, box in D, foot brake on, there's never any hesitation in moving away on the flat, even with no throttle. Pick up is very smooth with some acceleration. On the other hand...

2002 disco TD5 auto: auto problem? oil?

Yes, revs are pretty constant and the TC does most of the work. Gearchanges occur with almost no rev drop. It's the lock-up in 4th at 85+ km/h (when engine warm) that is the only really noticeable drop in revs.

2002 disco TD5 auto: auto problem? oil?

The test is worth doing. My disco behaves like you describe, and has done so for the two years I have owned it. I suspect there's nothing to worry about. The lock-up at around 85 kph is very noticeable when you are used to it. On a level road, if you watch the rev counter, you'll see it drop...

    Scantool for Discovery Td5

I'd buy a nanocom, but no-one seems to have any, and there are rumours of stopped production and a new model for March. Having solved my SLS problem without one, I can wait for now. Anyone got any firm news on a new nanocom? Hawkeye seems a viable alternative for not much more, and seems to...

    Clonk when changing direction (D2)

If it's a single clonk when you change direction, repeated when you go to the opposite direction, then I'd bet on the anti-roll bar bushes. If you slide under from front and get a firm grip on the anti-roll bar you can try to move it fore/aft. Any movement at bushes, they need replacing. They...

    Td5 oil filter change

Surely they need space at the end of the filter? Turbo oil drain pipe runs about 1cm clear on mine . . . . .

    Td5 oil filter change

I only had strap wrench with a handle (rather than socket sort) and there was not enough room to work . . . So in the end I took the plunge and bashed a chisel through the side of the filter. Worked a treat, and the filter was off in seconds. By the condition of the rubber seal, my guess is...

    Td5 oil filter change

I'm really struggling to get the main filter off - been trying a strap wrench, but there's not enough room between exhaust and turbo. Used to have a chain wrench with socket, but no longer . . . . In the end, I remember on some vehicle in the past bashing a chisel through the old filter and...

    Nanocom/ABS question

Just out of interest . . . . did driving faster reset the ABS light?

Discovery 1995 ES Water Ingress Passenger Footwell

If you don't use the aircon, then no cooling = no condensation, so no problem. But if you have the auto climate control, you will use the aircon every time you defrost, and whenever it's sunny, unless you manually override . . . . .

Discovery 1995 ES Water Ingress Passenger Footwell

Mine was the blocked vents as well. I was fooled by the apparent colour of the liquid soaking the driver's mat - till I realised that the brown colour was due to all the mud in the carpet. Realised it was only wet in hot weather, when auto setting meant AC was running. Then I thought I was going...
