    Hi, thanks for the tip. I did this and it cleared most of the oil There is still some small blobs but not more than a tablespoons worth in the whole expansion tank.

    Hi, just checked it again. The expansion tank is full of COOLANT with a layer of around 5mm of oil on the top. The oil level in the engine (via the dip stick) was at minimum when the engine was cold. So...does this change things?????? thanks for the prompt replies. This thing has cost me 700...

    Hi, all. I just collected my Y reg 1.8 freelander two days ago after a head gasket replacement. I checked the expansion tank just now (only 50 miles done) and it is FULL of thick black oil (no coolant) Is this in any way normal? Should I have the car recovered back to the garage
