Little update, I broke the budget and got a discovery 3, expensive tax band, and from the main dealer.
Loving it! (ducks to avoid custard pies being thrown).
Thanks guys for all the help.:)

A roads and country roads 40 ish. Don't think its radically different from my 1.4 petrol peugot 206, thought it would be much worse.

Thanks, jedi. Do I get it compression tested then? If oil is getting in would I be losing a lot of oil?

My 12 year old L series diesel Freelander has started doing 1200 rpm when my foot is nowhere near the pedal. Commonly only when warm.
Any ideas, please? Its an intermittent fault.
Any possibility it could be related to an oil leak from the IRD? (can't see how, but thought I would ask)

I wouldn't buy an old model when I could get a new one, but then I'm yer averij dumb punter and don't know any better. Still, France...yer jammy sod!
And whyzit "oh dear" about the ebay kit? My brother got me window diners off ebay when the gaylander trapped the rugratz in and wouldn't let em...

Thats funny they were running the two models simultaneously. Thanks.

Thanks, WolfyDave.
Tiswas is yours a Discovery 2 or 3?

Thanks, Mastiff. That sounds like a good deal from a garage. Is there any point in paying extra for a land rover approved one, do you think?

Jock can I be cheeky and ask what kind of price range you got your new beast for? Dicovery 2 or 3??

Thats encouraging, wasn't going to get one til the summer. I'm pretty sanguine about cars packing up, first 14 years of driving in morris minors (!) and then the old gaylander (after a brief fling with a peugot, ridiculouly reliable and cheap to fix!!).
Its very sweet to have a name for her!

Thanks for trying to save me though.
