You can visually inspect them. You will see if they are worn. Also check the rubbers that hold the shocks on, top and bottom. The spring bushes have 2 metal sleaves with rubber inbetween, that rubber will have shrunk and look all old, or possibly seperated from the metal sleaves if they are...

Its a hydraulic clutch , so after checking the previous posts, maybe flush the system out through the slave cylinder and check your pedal height adustment, and for any leaks in the system.

Back to basics i recon, Have you checked that you are getting a spark? hold one of the leads next to the block and check(carefull). Is it happening at the correct time? , timing light would be helpfull here. You getting fuel? Not sure how you check that, but possibly try start it for a bit, then...

It would appear that the pushrod(plunger side) gets mounted at the top. Which is how mine are fitted, Its just that mine have a large cover over it so hence being the bigger side. So maybe i confused you, as i see quiet a few shocks have an exposed pushrod part. Mine are like this...

With shocks i normally just think about the way you would want them so that stuff doesnt get stored in the larger part:P like water and mud, so I think you may have got it right.

Just to add a question i often wander about this topic, what are the para load capabilities like compared to the old leafs? Are the paras as reliable as the leafs? I have broken one rear leaf n 5 years of ownership which was partly my fault, but it didnt stop me from doing the 800km trip home.

besides taking the gearbox out, you could check the shifters in the tunnel, maybe the latch that stops you going directly in to reverse has broken and jammed the lever. if your lucky:P

Would think the front wheel drive and transfer case would be noisy in all gears? If you rev it up higher in the lower gears, you sure the noise still isnt there?
