No idea about a D2 but I know a D3 the upgrade is to use V8 caliper carriers and V8 disks. The V8 carriers hold the calipers further towards the outside of the wheel therefore better leverage and hence more friction

Yes I have, it is not just the piston size it is the fact that the Defender calipers are larger and take larger pads so more contact with the dusk and hence better brakeing

You must identify the cause of the overheating in the first place. A 300tdi is actually overcooled for the UK environment in standard form assuming all parts of the lubrication ( oil ) and cooling system (water) is standard and fully functioning ok. That is one way how it survives in hotter...

It could be a high temperature override system that switches the aircon fans on to aid cooling of the radiator as the previous owner might have had engine overheating problems. The only issue is that the aircon is already wired for this situation , but perhaps the previous owner did not know...
