Thanks Amphermiser, I will bleed it if the previous sugestions don't work. Interestingly someone suggest water in the fluid to me yesterday as they said clutch fluid is Hydroscopic. I keep bees and honey is Hydroscopic so I can see where you are coming from. I will let you know!

after lots of investigating, changing the fule filter which seemed to help it turns out the lift pump is pumping diesel out of a hole in its side/bottom. difficult to see. I will change the lift pump tomorrow and investigate the hole. I am hoping this will sort the problem.
