Found the problem! I changed the rubber doughnut on the prop shaft and hey presto everything is hunky dory. I took the diff off while I was at it just to check it over and it appears fine. Thanks for the suggestions chaps, Happy days!:D

Just in case it was the diff I bought an axle assembly from my local scrappie after assurances that the one they were selling would definitely fit. Guess what, when I got home that the diffs are different. Last time I believe a scrap dealer!:mad:

Does it happen when you select gear and does the noise come from under the centre console? If so it could be a worn output shaft from the gearbox assembly.

Sorry I'm late getting back to you Bell Autos. I've looked around the rear diff/ prop shaft and have noticed that at the cush drive rubber the diff/ prop shaft interface connecting bolts have torn through the rubber to such an extent that the bolt heads securing the assembly have fouled...

My old 200tdi disco averaged 34mpg when we went on hols to Annecy a couple of years ago keeping to about 70mph on the motorways over there.

Dear forumites My 'trusty'????? old 300TDI has developed a strange resonant vibration when accelerating through 3rd, 4th & 5th gears starting at around 1800 rpm and gets steadily louder as speed increases. I've been underneath and can see nothing rubbing or loose. the UJ's appear to be ok...

Thanks Ormus and Jedi. The diff lock light isn't on though I did use diff lock recently for some slippery stuff.

When reversing and on dipping the clutch to freewheel back it comes to a stop with a feeling that the transmission is braking (not breaking). It doesn't do this in any forward gears. The clutch travel appears to be fine for gear selection Any ideas?

I want to remove the tinted stuff from the windows on my disco. I think its the stick on stuff. Any suggestions as to the best way?

I thought I'd keep everyone posted as to progress with the 15 thou head skim. 300 tdi 145000 miles 15 thou off after blown gasket warped the head. Early days yet but there are no problems after 250 miles. Water and oil levels are good. Less smoke on startup. I'll post you all after 750 miles.

Thanks tigapiglet. I'll not be having any nightmares now about turbo blades getting mashed up in the engine.
