How to stop the hole getting bigger, and covering the gap?

Got a few holes appearing, any help in combating these before they get any worse?! M

Yesterday morning at a roundabout when driving and idle the engine no longer ran smoothly started splutterin, the gearstick noticeably wobbles and seems ever so slightly down on power? Any help welcome?
