Newbie in a 'spot' of bother

Hi,
Recently I've realised that I need to start giving my Defender 90 a tad more attention then she currently receives.
I will say that I've barely ever done anything mechanical in my life is an understatement.
Referring to the title 'spot' of bother, the rust on the bodywork after the winter has worsened slightly, and some places you can see litheough the panels; at the bottom of the passenger doorframe by the wheel arches and the fuel cap area are the worst! As well as around the rear number plate the rust is becoming quite an eyesore!
I've been reading up on how to combat rust, and I read one thing and think it sounds reasonable then find something complete against it...
Has anyone else found a nice easy way to combat this rust epidemic??

These are the worst areas, a few patches where it's bubbling?! [/GALLERY]

Your top two pictures are rusty steel and the middle two are areas of aluminium corrosion

And the aluminium corrosion is an electrolyte effect between the steel and the aluminium. All those areas area common and curable. Either with replacement capping or new fuel filler insert. Suggest you search the site for stuff on these problems and go to the Defenders part of the forum. It's all repairable and comes with the ownership. Only to finally say those bits are very external and visible. To put it another way it could be worth checking the chassis and generally underneath before you address those problems non of which would stop you passing an MOT but chassis rust is a different thing altogether.
