Out of interest how long did it take and how hard was it to change the stop solenoid?
I've the exact spec that you have (disco 200tdi in a 90) and have had the same problem.
My motor runs great when starting cold and drives for as long as you want it to up until you park up and switch the...

Thanks very much. Christ they aren't cheap. Could get myself a Freelander 1 for the same cost as a replacement soft-top... ouch.
-
My 90 has a canvas full tilt - back, cab, the lot - and as what passes for summer hoves into view I'd rather like to peel it off and pretend to have a convertible for as many of the sunny days as possible.
All good so far, however the canvas that I have might as well be made of lace in parts...

It's a conversation had over and over as new people buy Defenders and wonder if they can use the seats or the wheel arches as actual seats. A lap strap (as that's really the only way you could have a seat belt fitted to a bench seat) would do a good job or severing your spine in a lateral...

If you have side facing seats it is illegal to have any sort of seatbelt on them. They are just for sitting on without straps. My 90 has them on either side and each is good for 2 people - so 4 in the back in total.
Common sense tells you that driving at 60+ on the motorway with four people...

Two of the most expensive companies retreat from backing Defenders - probably will cause headaches for about three people.
Every quote I get lately is specialist for Land Rovers - with my rusting hulk qualifying for classic insurance pretty much it's only £150 a year fully comp with every bit...

Not strictly true - parking up and walking a dog can be considered "access" by some.
As I say the land in question is a fully legal Unsurfaced County Road (UCR) and I've confirmed with the local Rights of Way Officer that it's considered by them to be exactly that. Also that whilst they...

So you are trundling along a legal highway and you encounter the dreaded flying motorcycle sign (over a car in a red circle) that effectively tries to ban all motorised vehicles...
..."Except for Access"...
What's your interpretation of "access" and perhaps more importantly what's the...

Honestly mate - save your money and get anything other than a standard diesel engine. 200tdi would be the best bet. Readily available and will last forever.
-
I had a standard Series III diesel A-Reg (1982) as my first Land Rover. I loved it dearly.
...right up until I tried to drive it anywhere.
The diesel engine in these beasts is woefully underpowered. Land Rover had a policy of making engines the same size - but not the same power (petrol...

Some really interesting replies on here - thanks very much.
...and glad it's not just me who worries what "middle temperature" might mean. I am still none the wiser but if everyone else's engines haven't blown up then the chances are that mine might not too.
(Cursed it now)

Just a quick question around how hot an engine runs before it is too hot and breaks something catastrophic...
So I've got a 1987 90 with a 200tdi Disco engine transplant and I wondered how hot your temperature gauge indicates before you start going into a blind panic? Mine seems to run...

Any fluid leaking out of the brake system? For example overnight?
I had a fractured copper brake pipe on my Defender that caused a total disaster of 100% brake failure and that was originally a fracture on one side.

Defenders are an absolute nightmare that you will learn to love and hate in equal measure.
