    Loosing coolant

Thanks Hugh. I did think about this but light was failing so I've managed to find a supplier here in Guildford who has one in stock that I can collect Monday. Will fit temp fix if needed over the weekend. I think it gets quite hot down there by the exhaust, probably why the rubber cap has...

    Loosing coolant

Problem solved! 54 plate D2's had this pipe blanked off with a rubber cap. Apparently coolant flow was deemed to be sufficient without it! A new cap however costs a fortune but I have found some locally! Many thanks, Julian

    Loosing coolant

Have had a good look and have found the source of the leak, but this leads to a further problem! It is leaking from a blanking rubber plug fitted to the outlet from the oil cooler housing on the nearside of the engine. Looking at the diagrams on RAVE there should be an outlet hose fitted here...

    Loosing coolant

Haven't posted for a while - many miles of trouble free with the D2 TD5. But, possible problem looming. It is loosing coolant relatively quickly - topping up every couple of days. No water in oil and no oil in water. I can see though a pool of water on flange on side of crankcase below turbo...

    Front LT230 transfer box bearing

By way of an update! Transfer box is now on the bench in the workshop. Decided it had to come out due to excessive play in both diff and output bearings. Plus, serious oil leaks from intermediate shaft seals, sump and high/low selector cover meant best do the job properly. Thoroughly...

    Front LT230 transfer box bearing

Morning all, Just covered a good few hundred miles through France. In addition to all the oil leaks I now have a rumbling between 65 and 75mph!! Have looked at some of the older threads as I suspect too much play in front transfer box bearing. UJ's on both front and back props all free from...

    R380 drain plug

Hi all, Thanks for replies. Tried the jacking up method today but just managed to jack the entire vehicle up!! It's on real tight. Will try some heat tomorrow, but thanks for the size - I used calipers on my adjustable and came up with 32mm, but always good to confirm. It's not helped by the...

    R380 drain plug

Hello all, Still busy trying to fix oil leaks (engine and transfer box) on my late 2005 TD5 Landmark before going to France at the weekend. Whilst laying under the beast today trying to spot the source of the multitude of leaks I thought I'd change the gearbox oil as I have some MTF95 in the...

TD5 Knocking When Cold (Tappity Noise)

My D2 TD5 makes a similar noise when cold. The throttle opening seems to affect the type of noise it makes. It doesn't sound serious and I know of others that sound exactly the same. Best advice is to avoid large throttle openings until warmed up. Warming up shouldn't take long - 2 to 3 miles...

    TD5 engine oil leaks!

Thanks for these. The leak seems to be higher up and some oil is dripping off the back of the alternator! My 6 month old daughter has taken to waking up at 5.30 am so am already out looking at this time on a Sunday morning!! Thanks for the ideas!

    TD5 centrifugal oil filter cover

Same problem with mine but there are no captive nuts on the housing - just a thread in the (soft) aluminium casting! Always going to be a pain when over tightened. Now has a stainless steel bolt through each side - bit of a fiddle but allows a good seal to be made. Julian

    TD5 engine oil leaks!

Hi all, Been having to do some long distance drives from Surrey to Cumbria in my 2004 D2 TD5. It has 133K miles and has been well serviced, LR main dealer up to 100K. Having bought it in January I changed the oil recently with Shell Helix 5W30 as per the spec, both oil filters were...

    Guess the oil leak anyone?

One way of looking at it is that it is under sealing the Disco automatically! I've had a few D1's and D2's and I've never had one that didn't leak from somewhere. My current one is depositing a fine film of Transfer Box oil all over the place and leaves it's signature wherever I park it! Julian

New to land rovers advice please

High pitched whistle is the turbo spinning, it shouldn't be too loud on a TD5. If it sounds like an air leak to could be a split hose, or it could be a cracked exhaust manifold. Do you get any smoke when this happens? Could be hoses to the inter-cooler - there is quite a long run of them. In...

    Rear acoustic engine cover TD5

Humm, I'd be interested too as I too have that slightly tappety sound in mine. Thought it was the blower motor but turned that off and still there! Julian
