All this talk, made me realise that I had not changed the relay since fitting the towbar & electrics. The socket was connected to the spare plug as directed and all the lights worked OK, both on the vehicle and trailer.
I have today purchased a lucas relay, from an independant land rover...

No the centres were the bolts go thou is flat, and would not cause a problem, it is actually a landrover wheel but I cannot determine from which vehicle / age since it does not match the others.

Changed the VCU and bearings, many thanks to Hippo for his guide, I now feel a lot more confident, I was going to change the oil in the IRD but gave up due to the rain and wind, oil change can wait until tomorrow

My freelander is fitted with 16" x6J wheel RRC0029600XXX - however I was given a sixth wheel RTC112310XXX - both appear identical on the front face, but the rear os the wheels are total different

Much brighter and cleaner white light, if you check there shop they also have 7w bulbs which may be better for fog lights etc.
