It's in now and was cheaper than OEM. Not sure how you could lube one once it's installed. It's a gearbox off job to get at it.

Only one LR part number officially listed for PG1 gearbox (can't remember what that number is) allegedly applies to all Mk1 versions (1998-2006)
As I'm running out of time to get it sorted I've already decided to fill the upper channel section with a hard 2-pack adhesive (JB Weld - that stuff...

Ah, so a photo was included!! The tie wrap shown on the old shaft was slid down to sit on top of the oil seal. This shows the relative position of the shaft when fitted in the bell housing.

Need a sense check as I think I'm going mad.
Anyone else fitted a modified PG1 (for 1.8 petrol) clutch release arm from MG Mania?
They're the ones with a grease nipple to ensure the shaft remains properly lubricated.
On trial fit I discovered that the lubrication channels extend beyond the...

After a short break in procedings due to planned minor surgery I got back at swearing at the car this week.
Heat, lube, brute force, and a bodged on slide hammer got it all loose in the end.
Phew.
Need to replace the shaft though cos I bent the arm and buggered the socket. Doh.

OK.
I'm concerned at causing casing damage with any localised flame heat, so, I'll just keep at it...
Fortunately not in desperate need of the car at the mo.
Will report back once progress is made.
Thanks all!

Like I said up top, it only rotates very slightly if I belt it with a mallet, and then pry bar it back.
Getting bored of doing that now as nothing has changed in over a week of trying.
There's definitely no locking pin or circlip anywhere?
-
I should have made this clear in the original post, gearbox is off and on the garage floor.
I've been soaking it in release fluids and trying for over a week (like periodically, not full time!). Yep the fork retaining bolt is removed.
No noticeable improvement.
Considering cutting it... but...

I had similar albeit on a different car. It was a blocked exhaust catalyst.
Simply tested by removing cat from exhaust, and driving it.
It went like the wind and sounded like a WWII fighter plane!
Got a pattern cat, problem solved.

I love the Haynes sentence, "Slide the lever and shaft out through the casing and the release fork."
Ha ha ha ha yeah.
Is there a secret circlip retaining it?
It will move (rotational) a bit if I belt the release arm with a mallet, and back again with a pry bar, but I know it should move...

Cool, one less job this weekend!
I'm sure I'll get the chance to replace it another time! ;-)

After clutch fail, probably caused by release shaft not returning properly, I had the flywheel off to get it inspected. General consensus is its within limits so, that's going back on.
While this is off is it good practice to replace the crankshaft oil seal, or just leave it be if it doesn't...

Hi all.
I need to get the flywheel of my 1.8 petrol Freelander skimmed.
Looking for recommended engineers local(ish) to me in mid Wales.
I'm in Machynlleth, but willing to drive 90 minutes or so (eg out to Shrewsbury) for someone you guys trust to do a proper job.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks on all of that!
How would I check that a second hand flywheel wasn't warped?
He'd done a few K series HGs before, and it has lasted 40k so far... quite an achievement!
Cheers
