Hi - I have a 1982 Series III diesel. In the past, it has looked such a state that I haven't worried too much about security, but it does have a two-year-old galvanised chassis and now that I have painted it up and improved one or two things, I'm worried that it looks quite nickable.

Ok, thanks to both. I haven't looked at it yet, but it smokes and overheats. I was assuming bottom end would need attention as well as top, but I guess - as you say - the best thing is to take it apart and make judgements as I go.

This may be my problem. I have OODLES of smoke and little vacuum. By 'flaps' do you mean the tipping disc (Is that the butterfly?) inside the air intake...
