How do I stop it being stolen?

Hi - I have a 1982 Series III diesel. In the past, it has looked such a state that I haven't worried too much about security, but it does have a two-year-old galvanised chassis and now that I have painted it up and improved one or two things, I'm worried that it looks quite nickable.

Any suggestions for immobilising it in a convenient way that won't involve too much work in the dark when I come back to it? As I say, it is diesel. Thanks.

I used a real heavy duty security cable, similar to those used on motorbikes, around the steering wheel and role cage. In absence of a role cage, you could bolt a grab handle or similar to the bulkhead behind the seats, and grind the heads off the bolt. It looks sh!t and is a bit of a pain, but really its going to have to be something heavy duty and ugly if its going to deter a thief.

Bin the steering lock mounted engine stop, fit an after market job through the bulkhead and get in the habit of leaving it out. Even you will forget at times and wonder why it will not start. That should slow thieves up a bit.

pick up the feed wire for the starter solenoid off the back of the ignition switch

cut this and wire it to a crappy old looking toggle switch that looks identical to the switches for the lights and heater controls

in effect you will need to have this switch on to start the bugger and due to the birds nest of wires behind the clocks on the dash nobody with half a brain cell would want to start tackling that lot

they will then **** off and nick the crappy fiesta escort or mondeo down the street
