    Blood, sweat & beers ! 1984 Defender 90 restoration

As the proud and happy owner of Mr H's previous resto, christened 'Little Blue', I'll be following with interest! 150 faultless miles across Wales yesterday, and still smiling.

    X Brake

I have an X-brake, it's brilliant. I put off getting one for ages because of the expense and my determination to stick with the original drum brake. I have an occasional drip of oil from the gearbox output, even after new bearing and seal eventually it collected in the drum and contaminated the...

    Dim/Dip gone to ****!

Hi I've had this happen twice, 1st time was master switch on steering column - easy to replace. 2nd time it happened I replaced the master switch but didn't fix it. I eventually traced it to the dim dip system. It's easy enough to by-pass the dim dip system. If I remember right, there are only...

    long brake travel

Hi, my 300tdi was the same for a long time, I eventually discovered that the pistons in the calipers were corroded and so not operating evenly, it is possible to replace just the pistons and seals and clean up the calipers but mine were so bad I decided to change all the calipers and pistons. It...

    Radio keeps cutting off.

I probably went a bit over the top. As I had a few suspect earths I ran another large diameter cable from the battery to the engine and chassis and then to a point on the bulkhead to which I have attached the radio and any components with questionable earths. The biggest culprit seemed to be a...

    Radio keeps cutting off.

This happened to my 300tdi. It was bad earthing. I added a separate earth to the radio and it was fine. The previously installed spot lights and radio were earthed in the same spot and the initial surge of the spots was enough to upset the radio.

    Liveridge 4x4

Hi. I bought my defender 300tdi 110 from Liveridges about 4 years ago. I specifically wanted a 200 or 300tdi and looked for ages to try and find something I could use as my daily driver. Until you start looking for something decent you don't realise how hard it is to find something. Liveridges...

    Transmission Brake

Thanks for reply buster. I suppose it did cross my mind that oil could also contaminate the X-Eng pads also, but I thought perhaps cause the pads were postioned slightly differently and unable to "collect" oil so that the problem may not occur as it does in the drum brake. I know it seems a bit...

    Transmission Brake

Hi, the handbrake on my 300tdi is rubbish. I think it is mainly due to the odd drip of oil from the transfer box eventually building up and ruining the pads. I even changed the output flange and seals on the transfer box but it didn't take long for the problem to return and I'm fed up with...

    Used Engine Oil as Fuel

Hi After several years of mixing new veg oil with diesel at no more than about 30% when I can find it cheap enough to make it worth while in my 300tdi, I was intrigued to read that some people are mixing used engine oil with their diesel - so as I had a fair bit of used oil and a lot of odds and...

I have no dipped beam on my 1996 def

Hi I've had a few similar problems with light failures, on one occasion it was the dim-dip relay which is easy enough to remove totally, but your problem sounds more like the master light switch.

    No Dipped Beam

Hi The switch seems to be the most likely cause, so I shall try a new one tomo regardless. I am no expert but I have run a feed direct from the output of the switch to the dipped beam feed from the fuse box and both outputs from the switch (red and blue cables) and they both operate the dipped...

    No Dipped Beam

Hi I have a 1997 300tdi Defender, tonight I have completely lost dipped beam, but I still retain side lights and full beam. Several years ago I had a similar problem which turned out to be the master light switch on the columnn, However after taking the switch off tonight the switch seems to be...
