I had a clutch release bearing fail awhile back and had same symptons as you.
-
Check gear box and engine mounts are secure.
Clutch should be treated gently for awhile to allow it to bed into flywheel, ie no rapid gear changes and bring the pedal up before increase in the revs.
-
Is the pedal return spring fitted and the pivot point lubricated?

I would bet it is still in 4wd take the cover off the front output shaft casing that lets you see the shafts and compare lengths in various positions to attached pdf.
With red lever in neutral front is coupled to rear in low it is coupled ,going from low to high the yellow knob should jump up if...

Are you certain it is not in 4wd as if it is you will get wind up and knotchy steering.
Jack one front wheel up and check you can turn it freely front propshaft should turn when you rotate the wheel lots of turns not just rocking it as the dog clutch in front output gives some movement.

The series 1 rear tubs are a lot lower than Series 2 and 3 hence the much wider door top panel below the glass and on rear door these pics are 86" mine and a mates both long gone now.

Before fitting the clutch plate its well worth checking it moves ok on the splines and yes it is possible to put the clutch plate wrong way round.
Have you got the engine supported under the bell housing on the chassis cross member ,if engine pointing downwards hard to get gear box to go fully home.
-
If it knocks when rocker cover fitted check for witness marks inside rocker cover , the tappet adjusters look quite long if head has been skimmed it is some times necessary to fit two rocker cover gaskets.
-
Take the rear prop shaft off and drive it in 4wd on the front prop to see if problem goes.
-
The series 1 chassis had curved bulkhead mountings to accomodate the pedals.
pic from series 1 parts manual
Series 2 has straight bulkhead out riggers

What ever it is it is LHD.

I carry a spare fan belt with me as my engine is 200DI and would not like to risk overheating and damaging the head.
