OK - it wasn't the dim dip relay - the new one arrived and made no difference.
From the diagram attached above:
70 is the light switch
75 is the head light relay
76 the dim dip relay
6 is the fuse box
With the circuit broken I'm still getting 12 V at the switch feed - ie pin 1 measuring from...

is the crank shaft sensor reading direct from the shaft - or from a rotation that is gear driven by the crank at 2:1 - so that it can differentiate the inlet and outlet strokes?

The code is easy to find on the top of the injector - looks like this (picture taken from ebay):
For mine the plot thickens - the part number recorded through Nanocom is NNN000120 - ie the later flashable ECU.
So my guess is that mine has had a new ECU, the later type, and that's why...

I've arranged to take my 2000 Td5 over to Bell Auto Services in mid June for a re-map. So prior to that I've been doing little outstanding jobs to get it ready, FPR leak etc. One of the things I've done is plug it into my friends Nanocom to check for faults.
