I think that the internals of the cat have given up the ghost it sounds like a tin of broken crockery
the question is what happens if I just put a plain piece of pipe in till I can afford a new cat ,and what do you do with the lambda censor bolted in the top?
will it affect the mixture and engine management?
all help gratefully recieved thanks
 
just for now i'd grab a plasma cutter, angle grinder, breadknife, or whats evers hands and cut a home and cut the bottom out, remove all offending guts and seam weld back up.

I have knocked the internals out with a thin chisel or large screwdriver.

My previous car used to pass the MOT with a bashed out CAT, but would fail with a decat pipe fitted (perhaps the tester could see that the decat was fitted??)

If your worried, bash it out for now and replace before your MOT.

as long as your emitions are ok they will pass. they only check if the cat is present. they dont know its empty and probably dont care, if your emitions are ok then no questions. if there bad then they may say your cat is probably duff.

i'd rip the guts out and then pay £20 at yo9ur locat mot place for a inspection 6 weeks or so before your mot is due. if the emotions pass then put it through, if it fails buy that cat you were going to buy anyway.

Yeah just bish bash bosh the innards of the CAT, you will notice the power increase.

wear mask and ppe cos that stuff is toxic, also squirt some water into the CAT before you let loose with the hammer action. Helps keep dust to a minimum.
 
When your cat breaks down is the noise there constantly or intermittently ?
Only asking cos I have a noise/ rattle on my freelander td4 which is there every day but not constant. It seems to come on once the engine is warm, say 10- 15 mins and then just rattles, but can mainly be heard, daft as it sounds with the passenger window down. Does this sound like the cat ?
 
My Freelander failed its emissions test a couple of weeks ago. (MOTs not due for a couple of months though.)

The dealer put some fuel treatment in the tank and suggested it would probably be better by the time it comes round but I was wondering whether this might be indicative of a failing cat or sensor?
 
a big difference between the petrol and diesel, as far as i know the diesel has only to pass the smoke test so a cat wont make any difference to the mot, i took my cat out( td4 ) a few weeks ago, engine seems more lively now , i may even get improved fuel ecconomy , cat looked 50% blocked
