Very interesting videos.
My ex-wife was from the Czech Republic & by law they must have "all-season" or "winter" tyres on the in the winter. If they are stopped by the police or have an accident in the winter months and have summer tyres on the car their insurance is void and they get points on their licence.

Sensible in my mind because it improves safety on the roads.

I guess most people in this country would claim that we don't get enough snow to warrant the cost of winter tyres but even at my grand old age of 29 (for one more month!) I have seen the winters get colder and more snow fall too.

Search for their make/name online and you'll see a spec.

Excellent idea.

This is what I found on the Avon website:

  • Superb handling characteristics
  • Low noise levels
  • Good ride quality
  • Very stable at high speed
  • Excellent wet weather road holding
  • Good traction in muddy fields
  • Circumferential tread rib around the centre of the tyre aids steering response
  • 15% off road; 85% on road
Mentions nothing about winter or snow. So they'll be as useful as a flannel in the winter!

Think its time I got some new tyres!

they're probably ok so don't worry about splashing out and changing them

My Pirelli scorpion str's int as good as the general grabber AT2 on snow (general grabber AT2 were horrid on road so they were removed) but they're ok to use, and perform ok. The trick is not to go mad and eggspect yer tyres to overcome speed/stupidity.

I have a set of Continental WinterContact tyres which I used on my Yeti for the last 3 winters. They are excellent, only problem is they are 215/60 R16. Slightly small, but near enough. With the lift kit on they will look small, but give me more clearance and stand less chance of getting beached in deep snow

Winter tyres, or as I think they should be more correctly call 'cold weather tyres' remain flexible at temperatures below 7c.

Whereas summer tyres and even to an extent, AT tyres go hard at temperatures under 7c. Which means when it gets cold the wheels spin more and generally don't grip as well.

They have sipes in the tyres which are little 'cuts' in the tread blocks. The way you get traction in snow is these filling with snow. It is the snow on snow which then gives you traction.

The control, grip and handling of a car with winter tyres on is like driving a car in summer with summer tyres. It has to be experienced to be believed.

A winter tyre at 50mph in dry conditions will stop several metres earlier than a summer tyre at 5c in the same conditions.

Winter tyres also handle wet and slush much better than summer tyres.

Winter tyres are NOT just for snow.

Summer tyres wear faster in winter than winter tyres. It is cheaper to run with 2 sets of wheels because you don't need to buy tyres as frequently!

My current winter tyres have 6mm left-started at 8mm and the have done 20,000 miles so far.so they should be good for another 2 winters. They are supposed to be changed at 4mm otherwise they don't work properly in bad weather (but there again, summer tyres should be changed around then as well for the same reason.

It is just about time for me to put them on the Freelander.

I will have them on until about April.

If in doubt......buy some. You won't regret it. They will be way better and safer than AT's which are a compromise

When I bought mine, it was cheaper to buy some genuine Skoda steel 16" wheels and the 16" winter tyres, than buy some 17" winter tyres.

And that applies to winter tyres as well as summer/AT tyres.

Reduce your speeds............

4x4 helps you go forward but not stop or go round a corner on ice. Winter tyres help, but there are not perfect. Spiked tyres would be better, but in the UK I think they are illegal.

Those Pirelli ATR's look interesting (at the bottom of the linked page)...never seen those before.

Yes I spotted them. Never saw them before so they may only be on sale during the colder months.

Agree with everything Epicuser said. I had Continental TS850 winters on my Golf last year and it was far, far better than any 4x4 I'd had in the snow and ice as well as general winter use. Driving in the snow in the New Forest and Oxfordshire was just like driving in summer on wet roads I reckon. Never once did I feel about to lose grip. The only time they slid is when I made them, and then when I stopped being silly, they instantly regripped. Everytime I tell people to get winter tyres the standard response is that it only snows a couple of days. But maybe one day they will learn it's not just for snow..! And even so, maybe that one day a year where the whole country grinds to as halt, if we all had winter tyres then it wouldn't happen. I'm sure accidents would be seriously reduced in cold weather too.

i have a pair of winter tyres on my rover 45...on the rear in the summer and up front in the winter....the tyres perform great in cold/snow/ice...i hardly need a 4x4 in the winter.

Totally dangerous, never mix summer and winter tyres

What I want to know is why the drivers wore their seat belts, I mean, it's not like they were going to meet another car or get stopped by a bobby. :D:D
