Hi , not currently a owner , but am looking to be , by the end of the weekend

First off, im used to the R8X which i sold 3 week ago following being made redundant and just couldn't afford to run the rx8 , no matter how much i liked it ..
2 days after selling the rx8 i was offered another job which starts a week on monday ( not much abseiling work out there at the moment but i found some )
Now my commute will be 30 / 40 mile a a day so been looking at the freelander TD4..

seen quite a few and some in my budget which i suppose is max at £2500 ( i know this aint mega bux but there are a few out there :) ) and been looking at 2002 / 2003 models within that price range. Now i do have a friend local who is a mechanic to come view any with as this is truly uncharted territory for me

could any one advise on what i should be looking for ?
any problems to look out for ?
is there any specific items items i should check that has been changed ?
what should i be asking potential sellers ?

any help would be great and look forward to keeping u all updated very soon

thanks

Dave

ok soo its been a while since registering , and what with famiky problems ive finally had the time to go buy a td4 - 3 dr .....
driving home today and all was good and rather quiet .... hit the motorway and hit seventy , then i gets a weee bit of vibration .. well ok was much morethan weee it was rather annoying .... realy bad between 70 and 80..
got near home and popped into local tyre place and had front tyres balanced. apparently they were realy far out.. for what its worth he said 20 would make the car shake and both the front wheels were between 90 and 110 out on the balancing

went for a blast up the motor way and all is sweet... went home to give the car a clean in and out
tested the descent button along with every other button :D.. all seems good .. except for rear wiper but ill get to that in a bit :D

mrs came home and we went shopping.. its noisy now in the td4... loud hum , deep whining noise but seems to be drivng fine ? wondering if ive done something when putting in decent mode ? maybe its still holding back on that abit ? i dunno
i definetly turned it off seems to becoming from the middle / rear

hopefully some one may point me in the right direction , what to check and where to look ?
i know i may not have described this very well but im trying :D

any one close to manchester to have a looksy ?:)

2nd fault , i knew when i bought it.. the rear window wont move and a wire has snapped inside and a white plastic tube and spring lying inside the door , is this possibly a easy fix ? door operates fine , just the glass is on the outside of the seal... i believe this may be possible fix with a brake cable ?

3rd .. rear wiper aint working :D

any help and or advice would be great

thanks

hdc will only operate in 1st or reverse gears and automatically operates the brakes.
the whine could be the vcu bearings. i would check the oil levels/condition in the ird, gearbox and final drive as a precaution.

any one local :)

to where exactly ? no location shown, we're not sykick, physik, pyskix oh f*ck it, we can't read minds !

operating the hdc button will have no effect that can cause a whining sound so look else where. HDC operated by using the brakes alone. The 4 wheel drive bit isn't switchable, which a lot of people think is controlled by the HDC switch.

the rear window sounds like it needs a new regulator assembly (or a repair) fiddly but possible

Neat one you got there mate. Best of luck.

Re the window I have no clue

Re wiper, Not much to confuse i reckon, either switch, wiring/ connection or motor - have you tried working it with both switches? (dry mode and wet), else try to give a direct 12v supply if available to the motor to be able to make sure the motor is a runner.

If it runs, i'd try connecting a multimeter in continuity mode / test lamp in place of the motor and press the switch

if no beep i'd disconnect switch and connect multimeter/lamp directly to the switch and re-press

This is what i would do, i stand to correction by the more-experienced experts here

it is a pity i was at the trafford center on sunday i could have had a look for you ,BUT it sounds as though you bearing each side of the vcu are on the way out also you can buty the kit of flebay for the back window
