I had a strange stating issue earlier. Usually when starting i just turn the key with no throttle and it starts no problem.

When to start it before and it didn't fire up as nomal, pressed the throttle pedal and nothing happened. It was like the peddle wasn't attached to anything. This happened 3 times and then it started as normal on the next try.

Any ideas what to check first?

throttle pedal.. ?

only thing one can feel is the return spring ..
it's connected to a potentiometer .. i.e. a variable resistor like a hi-fi volume knob
( actually i think it's a double .. and the ecu compares the voltage between them )
that in turn is wired to the engine computer thing ( ecu )

not sure that pressing the pedal whilst starting does anything ..

besides which .. i learnt on old-type diesels Never to press the throttle when starting
( i.e. non-computer engine management type .. mechanical injectors etc .. )

~~~~~~~~~~~~
IF i found out that pressing the throttle on a TD4 actually helped start it ..
( when normal leave-it-alone don't work )
rekon i'd be looking at the fuel-rail sensor connection
and / or maybe the throttle pedal potentiometer itself .. might be worn ..
but before that .. I'd definitely find out If pressing the pedal while starting
actually has any effect at all ..
( read up on another vehicle make .. and their's has no effect until
( the engine actually fires up ..
td4 owners manual sais don't press the pedal whilst starting a.f.a.i.k.
( doesn't state Why :)
( unless it's the same as pre. computerised diesels whereas the engine would fire up to full revs immediately
( and potentially cause mechanical damage
~~~~~~~~~
btw: on the td4 .. if the throttle pedal is depressed full travel .. 5 times .. with the ignition 'on'
that calibrates the throttle so that at full-throttle it gives the proper-maximum signal to the ecu
