I still refuse to believe its a Land Rover! Only built to compete with the Japs, Land Rover should get back to their roots and start building Proper 4x4's again!!!!!! That also goes for the new Range Rover Sport! If I want a Sports car, I'll buy one!

Bloody BMW and FORD! Together they've killed Land Rover!

Land Rover! Best of British??????????????????????? Not any more!
(I still love my Discovery though!)

(sorry about that little rant, I'll feel a lot better now!)

Hi apache,

I have the impression you have not owned many cars so far ? Otherwise you would know each and every one has sooner or later problems. If I were you and it would all be too much for me I certainly would try to get rid of it as soon as possible and try my luck elsewhere. No need to raise your bloodpressure on a daily basis if driving the Hippo is working that much on your system. You better be aware of your health.

In other words never buy a Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 nor a VW Touareg and others as these carmakers should stick to their roots ??:) :)

Hi people,
i must confess to you all that i have got an 02 V6 ES and the only thing that has gone wrong with it was the inlet manifold since i have owned it, i fixed that for £158.00 then sent it into l/r for a free A151 recall as this is to stop it from happening again this is an engine tune download, ( had it 2 years ) i have always wanted one and this one is a cracker, don't know if this makes any difference but i am the second owner and the first was FORD AND LANDROVER PROJECT VEHICLES got it for £11700.00 with only 1500.00 on clock after hagaling with sales man at garage and it came with quod spot lights front nudge bar never seen one like it on another l/r, roof bars and full landrover body kit so got it for a snip if you ask me and everything works like new so sorry cannot slate or fault this one only down side is the wife said she is not inpressed with the fuel consumption but i knew what it did when i bought it.

Our Freelander needs a new engine. £5k is the damage. The alternative is to sell the car without an engine for peanuts. How can a four year old car be in this state?!!!

My view is that Land Rover are simply not capable of building a modern car that is competitive for reliability.

Even the LR boss Matthew Taylor admits this. This is why the Discovery is called D3 in the states.

Freelander 1 is a lost cause. If Freelander 2 has a chance with Ford.

So my view is that LR is the problem - slapstick engineering, rubbish component spec, 1970's production standards. Ford are the knight in shining armour, not the devil incarnate.

5 GRAND!!! JEEEEZ!!!! It might be worth buying another one - just for spares! (Maybe we could suggest a Buy One - Get One Free Option from Rover Dealers?)

At that price i would DEFINATELY be considering the V8 option;) . There must be recon agents that can do better than that, but is it worth replacing with a suspect design - Someone must have a long term solution - even if it is throwing away the drive train and replacing it with something known to be reliable. The Hippo is a good looking buggy and is (supposed to be) good off road - all it needs is a RELIABLE power plant.:D

Come on guys - surely we can find a suitable replacement unit with all the brains in this forum. Some of you must have been stripping these things down in ya sleep.;)

Had a little chat with the dealer this morning. The unit is now £3,200 plus hoses and other bits and bobs.

The dealer will add a warranty value of £850 against the last rebuild that they did 15,000 miles ago. LR add to that a good will sum of another £600 based on the age and mileage of the car.

So now the bill is £1850 - which is ghastly, so we're now talking about a trade value for the car to get rid of the hippo, and me bugging them.

We'll see...

I think £1800 aint too bad - I just paid £711 just to have the inlet manifold (VIS valves) replaced:(
So a new engine complete for £1800 aint too bad - I suppose the million dollar (£1800) question would be - "If you pay this sum - what warranty is there on the engine?" Bearing in mind the Hippo would depreciate that much easily - they aint cheap!:p and you could recover that by selling it with a new engine......

Landrover Freelander - "The Best of British Un-reliabilty"

The other Landrover products in my experience are marginally better for reliabilty but still a lot worse than the Japs.

Hello Widget

Please let me know how long you have had the car for and when the dealer did the last engine re-build.

Sounds like you have a case for tradind standards to look in to.!!!!!

Last top-end rebuild was in March. We've accepted a trade in with the dealer than puts us square now. One phone call from the solicitor helped put it all right.
