My therapist says sharing with the group is good for me so here goes
Had my FL1 serviced last week (because Im really lazy and have loads of money) and the garage told me that theyd had trouble starting my car, twice. They suspected the starter motor was duff and kindly quoted for replacement. Id not had any problems starting the car myself but there you go. A few days later, I went to work as normal in the morning but come lunchtime I went to go out and sure enough, the car wouldnt start. I had power, the dashboard lights worked as did the radio and blowers etc. Turn the key to position 3 and nothing, no clicks, no whir, no dimming of lights oh dear etc. Popped the bonnet and tried the key again and apart from the idle control valve doing its thing the engine remained silent.
Long story short, it turns out the K series has a problem with corrosion on the starter motor main supply connector (probably why replacing the starter motor fixes the problem). Having cleaned the connector and plug to within an inch of its life all was right with the world again.
All that remains is to figure out why something as important as the starter motor main supply connector, located fairly low down on an engine in a 4x4 wouldnt be, oh I dont know, say, robust
