Hello to all, thought id try and make a D.I.Y water pump guide this is my first one so sorry if not up to standards lol

Things i needed

32mm Fan Spanner
10mm Spanner
Socket set
Stanley Knife blade
Couple of screwdrivers (undoing clips)
Fine sanding block
Hylomar gasket paste
Plank of wood to hold PAS pulley

Well this all happened when i went to the cafe the other morning, water pump pulley sheered off

so went to local landrover place and got mesen a new pump and started work on her

S8304548.jpg

first thing i did was take off tensioner, (took belt off already because of pulley sheered off)

S8304551.jpg

remove top rad hose, then took fan off (remember reverse thread) and removed fan cowling

then using 10mm spanner and 10mm socket loosened all PAS pulley bolts
last one me plank of wood came in handy to hold pulley in place while i unscrewed the third and final one, the unscrewed the 10mm water pump bolts

S8304553.jpg

took off water pump and found the reason it has sheered

S8304557.jpg

Bearing had collapsed

Kept all bolts in order ready for reassemble (and thats the plank i used)

S8304554.jpg

Then i carefully took all remains of old gasket and used me sanding block to get a nice smooth finish

S8304559.jpg

Then i applied hylomar to cleaned face and put new gasket on then put some more hylomar to the face on new water pump, cleaned bolts up with a wire brush and sanding block and put i tiny amount of copper anti-seize on them, assemble is same as removal in reverse order, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN PUMP BOLTS!

Might be an idea to mention filling her up with coolant again!

I've known someone so pleased with changing a water pump he forgot the water and fried a Mini Cooper 'S'. The head was so hot it burned off all the green paint.

Maybe I'm just a retard, but whats the bloody trick fro removing all three bolts to the pullys?

Once you get to the third bolt, there is nothing to help grip the pully, hold it in place o get the last bolt off. I've even tried wedging a drift in there, but to no avail.

Leave the serpintine belt on (assumeing the bearing didn't collapse). This holds it enough that you can crack the bolts off.

use an oil filter remover strap one of the rubber ones around the pully and turn the socket, works a treat mate

Seeing as you didn't replace the P gasket at the same time did you really need to remove the tensioner?

i thought you had to replace the p gasket when ever you removed the bolts:confused:

It is advisable to, but it wasn't shown in the photo sequence....and when the RAC man changed my water pump at the side of the road he didn't do the P Gasket.....mind you I had to do it about 6 months later

AAARRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH! Just got five short and one long bolt out of the water pump housing but the two others now have rounded heads!!!! NOT ME but my assistant and ex-best mate! It was all going to plan, followed the above advice but now I'm a little stuck. No point asking around here in France the French know little about anything but they especially know bugger all about Land Rovers. So, I'm just staring at 'em, two knackered bolt heads, and the sun going down............
