Leaking Sun Roof's

Hi, Im new hear and have Sunroof leaks.
Great article but is there a way of clearing the drain tubes without removeing the sun roof unit from the roof. I have been trying to see if i could see the drains from above but dont seem to be able and were do the drains drain to. With the way that the weather has been of late i dont want to open every thing up and then get rained on. This has all come to light when i started getting strange electrical problems like central locking not working, No indecators or hazards, ect. After putting a blower heater blowing under the dash all came back but for how long.
Help, im drouning!!!!

This may be of some help

Park it on a extrem angle ie front and back wheels on kerb that works for me nice dry after heavy rain

the cant be bothered to take out the roof lining way. i did this as a temporary fix last summer and its been dry ever since.
i run a bead of silicon around the outer plastic surround where it joins the roof.

Got the same problem and used the same method as Discochimp except I parked uphill in the rain. Dropped the roof liner down today and found the drain pipe broken at point 10 on the diagram. The right hand elbow bit was hard to buy but the rest is easy.

Sort out the faulty seals and u don't need drain pipes, unless you open the sunroof with rain on the glass. the pipes are there to take any run-off when the glass is tilted before sliding back.

I know this is a common fault with the discovery, so got a new genuine seal, 2x tube mastic, a few new screws . Took the sunroof apart, cleaned all the surfaces and used the best part on a tube matic on each, the sunroof undercarrage and the roof finnisher, replaced the seal . left for a few days and then put the glass back in , closed and left again for a few days.

Using a watering can i poured the water over the sunroof 5 times, no leak.

when i got in the discovery there was a swimming pool on the back seat again . It seems to be leaking through the manual lever for open/closing it.

My question .. is there anywhere it could be directly coming from? or is it a case of take it all apart and start again?


today,

i took the rear sunroof glass off and had a look round, bone dry every where except for the open / close hanle area. It seems that, when its getting wet, the water will go down the back of the seal , under it and out the other side on to the undertray. thats ok as most of the undertray have drain holes to let the water out. But at the lever there are 3 issues i can see

1) there is a large gap between the undertray and the handle, allowing water to drain out into the car.
2) there is a small nut , open, water leaks from that
3) somehow the water is getting in from the snake cable to the handle assy.

is the seal on the correct way round ? :scratching_chin:

hello have you got it sorted you need to take the whole thing including headlineing ect I tried it once then gave up I called someone out to do it for me and they where great got 12month guarantee so no problems for me in winter x

As a Land-Rover owner he will always carry a boot full of self recovery gear, so he must have been prepared for this possibility

I've currently got my 300tdi stripped down and I noticed when it gets moved a few feet there's a bit of water come out of the drain tubes by the back light area.
I must have a leaky seal!

Seems I spoilt for choice when it comes to leaky sunroof threads Took the headlining out and treated the old girl to a car wash so I could see where the water was getting in.

All four pipes seem intact and the front roof stayed dry but there was a steady flow of water running off the rear roof motor assembly onto the back seat, good job I'm used to the waterfall from the seatbelt tensioner slot so there's a pile of towels behind my seat.

I'm having a hard of thinking moment here probably due to reading too many leaky sunroof posts LOL How many seals are there on each sunroof, there's the one between frame and glass, think these are the ones available on Ebay for about 20 quid? Is there another one between the frame and roof or is that just a line of sealant? Next step is to remove the sunroof and sort it (will do both of them while the liner is down) but don't want to make things worse if I don't have the needed parts to hand, I couldn't stand the whining from daughter if she has to sit in the back under an umbrella. :laugh:

I used Tiger seal to seal the sunroof frame to roof joint,and just cleaned the glass to frame seals,it stopped mine leaking from there,another place to watch out for is the top corners of the windscreen as they are prone to leaking there as well,if you've got the headliner out it pays to re-seal the roof bars as well.

Good idea about the roof bars, may as well get it all done as I don't intend taking the roofliner out again, not until it falls apart anyway. Windscreen has lost it's heating circuit in a few places and with a couple of big chips it might be time to get it replaced soon. All work is off for the moment, went to change the injector harness but was nearly blown off my feet as soon as I stepped outside.
