I may possibly have sucked some water into my engine. Um, i went into a puddle which I knew wasn't too deep, but i hit it too fast and it splashed up and obviously sucked some in, as the engine locked.
I removed the glow plugs, cleared out the water, got it running again, albiet badly and with much smoke.
Basically I know that I have bent a con rod. So, I have set about taking apart the engine.
I couldn't get the number 1 cylinder out, due to the stupidly large amount that the con rod is bent i think? Is the big end reallly that close a fit in the bore?
However, more importantly I have also just noticed a lump of cylinder in my sump, this has been smashed off the bottom of the number 1 bore.
Im guessing that my trusty 12J engine is now buggrayed.
Next question... Does anyone have one that I can buy, that works?
Many thanks!

oooh dear! I take it that you've taken the head off, undone the big end caps, moved the con rod so that it can slide past your crank shaft and then attempted to whack the piston down from above with the wooden end of a hammer?

Well, the puddle was only up to the top of the wheels, but still the water entered...
No I havn't tried to go down with the pistons, i tried the upwards approach, is this not correct? Surely the piston won't fit past the crank shaft anyway?
Although, with a chunk missing from the block surely this is terminal for the engine?

Would love to, but my insurance company won't allow currently, as I am only 19. You should have seen the fuss caused when I asked about a V8...
How easily does a Disco TDi go in anyway? Someone told me that you need to move engine mounts and extend pipes, and stuff like that?

The piston wont fit past the crank shaft, it has to be knocked up and out of the top, but what I was suggesting is that you try smacking it down to free it off, I got the impression that it was stuck in the bore?

I'd look for a replacement tbh, a chunk missing out of your block doesn't sound like a good thing!

No the bottom piston ring was caught on the lip worn into the top of the bore, but also because the con rod is actually that bent, i think it wnt fit up through that way anyway. Am i right in thinking that the big end of the con rod is a good fit down through the bore?

To give you some idea, the con rod is that bent that:
At TDC you can actually see at least 1cm difference between the tops of pistons 1 & 4
At BDC you can actually also see that the bottom of the big end is not parallel with the floor, if that makes sense.

I am looking for a replacement, at least a replacement block (because I have just reseated and re sealed all my valves etc) So does anyone know of one going? Or a complete TD, or something?

by puddle you mean lake and by fast you mean flatout ?
12js arnt that expensive you can pick one up fer about 200 quid.

get a snorkel

I binned a working 2.5TD a while back, ive still got the turbo and alternator if u ever need eather. Anyway; Buy a Disco 1, rip its guts out and shove them in yer defender. much much much better, well worth it. :D Also, make a snorkel from some drian pipe from wicks.

Rich.

:) im askin about... I cant afford to insure my landy with a TDi at the moment, my insurance company don't want to listen to the fact that its still a land rover engine, so ive kinda gotta stick with the 12j, or maybe even a 19j.

And it was a puddle, it only came up to the tops of the wheels, and i was only in 2nd low also, so i don't see how I could have been going that fast! I rekon I have just been really unfortunate. I know how deep the puddle was all the way through, i checked it, and i also had to drag the landy out with a hand operated winch.

Does anyone even have a 12 or 19j block lying around? the rest of my engine, bar 2 conrods, is fine, so I could rebuild it around that maybe? I'm kinda getting desperate... Its either fix my 90 or drive a renault 5 around until i can... Help!!!

Only the top of the wheels is high for a landy with no snorkel, you never know how the water is swerling and waving around under the bonnet. Still, you must have been preaty unlucky. I know it sounds stupid but have you looked up the insurance with a V8? When i checked last it was actually cheaper than the TD engine. Duno how that works...

Top of the wheel, or top of the tyre?
