Just finishing off, new shocks/springs fitted and come to the 'easy' one the steering damper. Old one came off no problem... come to fit the fancy ****part super gaz and I cant for the life of me get the sleeved poly bush end back into the bracket to put the bolt through.

Tried doing it with the other end fitted.... tried it free hand. Dont want to start tapping it or I will burr the metal sleeve. its all clean, no washers left in.... its so close the bastid!

Any ideas gents? Hope I'm missing something really stoopid

The fitted sleeve that went through the poly bush was 1mm to long. No wonder it wouldn't fit. I filed it down and its fitted now.
Someone slap me with a big stick if I buy Britpart again.... that sort a thing is just shoddy, very poor. A 10 minute job turned into 2 hours.

Quite a few bushes on things like steering dampers, shocks, etc are like that. I usually just compress the metal sleeve a bit further in a vice or press.

but the problem was that the metal sleeve was physically too big to fit in the slot

Do you know how hard I'm trying to hold back from verbally abusing you at the moment?:( I feel like I have tourettes.:p:D

Use the vice or press to compress the sleeve by the 1mm that is required to make it fit. The ends of the sleeve are burred over. You just create a slightly bigger burr.

Some advice on this please re the other end of the damper.... the polybush for the 'spiked end' came in 2 halfs that go either side of a thin plate. With rubber I would fully compress...cant find any advice on this, I have the polybushes tightened down firmly but NOT distorted... is that about right?

I've just made sure there tight, have you used 2 of the metal washers off the other damper ad in the new kit you only get 2 washers and you need 4

Thanks Pugrocket.... I rang Britpart re this as no instructions with the damper... useless. Rang Paddocks they said 2 cups on the outer of the two halfs.... I wasn't 100% convinced as 4 came off. I have only done 2 miles and have the old rubber bushes and cups set aside. Take a look and some pics when the weather clears and sort it.

I've always fitted em with them distorted. Mine has been on for nearly 2 years now and the bushes are still in good nick.

2 or 4 washers? The kit came with 2 cup washers flat inside and out. Seemed odd as the original damper had 4. Anyway I fitted it with 2. Just to make sure I whipped it off and took some pics.... I had the old washers and bushes so laid them out next to the new set...had a cig and a coffee.

The shoulder on the new polybushes has to lock into something or its going to float around and wont last long. On this particular damper (some may be different) the shoulders fit nicely into the bracket on the chassis. No way the old washers will assist, the shoulder on the polybush is too big for washers fit over so they would float and wear out.

So.... docked the 2 polybushes into the frame, good fit and happy thats right.
For now anyway:D

2 washers. If the bushes are done up as shown in pics 1 and 2 you will be fine. If they are as in the last pic I would advise tightening em down more.

The last owner replaced the rear springs at some time.... the original LR shocks had been taken off and when re fitted put the cup washers the wrong way round so they didn't lock into the rubber bush. This is the result.... no wonder it was bouncing like an old bed.
