Hello all,

Ive just purchased my first Landy, a V8 Defender 110 SW, 1990 with 168k. My main reason for buying was to take my kids out and about touring and green laning. I also thought it would be a good opportunity to get my hands dirty under the bonnet and learn how to fix things I'm too scared to on the missus' car.

So this first post will seem dumb to most of you but after carrying out some research on the internet and looking through the Haynes manuals I still am a little unsure of the type of oil (well, mainly brand) that I should be putting in.

Please could someone possibly give me a few pointers with the oil (type and brand) they are using in the engine, LT85 gearbox, axles etc. as I think being the 'new' owner the first thing I should be doing is changing them all.

As an aside, nothing has really prepared me for the 'clunkiness' of the gearbox, but I do have a niggling concern that my LT85 clunkiness is abnormal...when I pull away nice and slow changes are smooth, but if I gun it a bit, 1st to 2nd grates a bit and so does 2nd to 3rd. All is well taking it easy though. Although not in the least bit an expert, does this sound like a synchromesh problem or just a Landy that prefers to be driven like a Landy rather than a car?!

Many thanks

The manual gearbox likes unrushed gear changes and the symptoms you described when you "gun it a bit" are quite normal.

For engine oil, I use 10W/40. For a full list of brands and viscosity's recommended by Land Rover consult the owners manual. Frequency of oil changes is more important than brand, change it every 6000 miles or less and those V8 engines will usually do 250,000 miles quite easily.

Most people use ATF IID for the gearbox, transfer box and power steering box, but Land Rover recommend a slightly different ATF for the manual (LT77) box, although ATF IID seems to work well too. You would need to check the requirements for the LT85 gearbox, this is a stronger version of the LT77 gearbox for the V8 90 and 110 (although I think the Discovery V8 still used the LT77 gearbox)

For the axles, SAE 90EP oil and for the swivel housing Land Rover have changed their recommendation to swivel grease Land Rover part number STC3435 (a one shot packet).

Hello,

Thanks very much for the info, especially about the gearbox! the reason I was asking about the oil really is because I have no owners manual with the vehicle, all I have are the Haynes manuals so I am trying to gauge what is the norm after reading conflicting info about ATF and MTF for the gearbox....now I know its got to be ATF but someone else also said normal engine oil will be fine too. Hence the big fat ?

Cheers

I think normal engine oil would be a bit too thick for the gearbox, it would make the gear change a little more notchy. It does seem a little odd to put ATF in a manual box, but thats what the Land Rover manual boxes like, there may be a filter in it to clean out as well, there is on the LT77 manual box.

There is a picture of this filter at the bottom of this link:

It's at the very bottom of the page, and don't worry about the title of the link

Hi, with the V8 a 10/40 is ok for winter, if you are going to work it hard in hot weather I would go 20/50 or better still run a full synthetic 15/50 all the time. Re the gearbox , these have a built in pump, so you dont want to put in a thick oil. The best answer is synthetic , use Redline suppliers are at most racing circuits , if you contact redline they will advise which .
I have run Redline synthetic in my 110 V8 since 1989, its expensive to buy but so are LT85 recons . Its been to OZ and back speaks for itself JMHO

On Autodata technical info it says 10w40 for the gearbox as well as the engine, LR must have changed their recommendation. It only lists 20w/50 for hot climate conditions so the 15w/50 might be too thick for winter. It also says 90w for the diffs and 90 for the transfer box, hopefully this helps you bud.

Cheers for the info, yes it does help...I'll check out redline and see what they offer.

Aside from that I may try 10w40 as that seem the consensus after an evening of googling.

Many thanks
