Brake Light Switch

According to Haynes:

- Switch is located on the rear of the pedal mounting box
- Disconnect the wiring connectors from the switch
- Slacken the switch locknut, and unscrew the switch from the mounting box

When refitting, you need to adjust the switch so the the brake lights come on when the pedal has moved about 5mm - once adjusted, tighten up the lock nut

Hope that helps

thanks for that but i will rephrase the question. How do i get to the switch,do i dismantle the lower dash,do i take out the pedal box ???

do i really have to do all that to get to a ten bob switch.think i'll just get a new can of wd40 with the straw and try lubricating switch from the pedal side...

Don't think it'll be any different to mine.
It's an awkward tight squeeze to get at but can be removed without removing the pedal box and I've got quite large hands. ;) :D :D

is it maybe because mine is ex army or is there a way to access the back/wiring side of the switch.

As Sattion House says

I would only add you might want to consider a sealant on refitting ;)

Very grateful thanks to Broomsgrove Defender. Had what I thought was a failed brake light switch on my '96 Defender 90. Was about to start pulling down the pedal box when I came across this post. Certainly was a bit of a fiddle but certainly worth it. Turned out to be just sticky contacts on the switch - fixed with WD40. Switch sorted and replaced all in around an hour. Brilliant.

No problemo ;) :D :D

My brake light switch just failed so I have just been playing with this on a 93 Defender Stationwagon. Having unbolted the pedal box (not too difficult as none of the bolts resisted much ) I find the locknut on the switch is a 19mm brass one on the outside of the pedal box. I had it in my head that the clever people at Landrover had put the nut on the inside! So - pull of the two spade connectors, use a 19mm spanner to slacken the locknut (on the outside of the box) - then a 13mm spanner to start unscrewing the switch (the body is rectangular and the spanner fits pretty well). Refitting is a reversal etc..

Taking the brake pedal box off was not all wasted effort however - cleaning up the rust on the bulkhead around the hole has revealed a swiss cheese like section under the clutch pedal box (I'm guessing, in the mists of time, clutch fluid stripped paint off and let the tin worm in). The job gets bigger but looks like I caught it just in time.

Not sure if that is a question? Or a suggestion.

But I think they may have sorted it out, as the thread is from 2011! :)

Welcome to lz, anyway!
