Axle re-location cones .. making my own.

So, last weekend, springs kept getting spat out till we tamed them with straps .. I had to do something so having worked out between us that the current re-location cones were half the problem, and the angle the springs moved out when the axle was dropped the other half. To kill both issues we decided it’d be best to use the re-location cones on the axle and fix the springs to the chassis, but how to do so?

This is one of the re-location cones, and the component parts of it.

To use them I used an angle grinder (Oh yeaaah !!) to take the four fittings off, and drilled the base to suit the spring axle seats.

Tried fitting, then bolted onto the axle and looks OK.

Then the springs, how to mount to the chassis? At first I thought of exhaust clamps or something like that, but then thought I could basically bolt them up with a spring axle mount and the D44 relocation holding plate, which holds the re-location cone from above the chassis mount. Bit of marking out and measuring, bit of grinding and drilling and these are the constituent parts.

Had to grind some of the edge off to allow the spring helix 'through' and help the spring and seat sit flat against the rubber cush and chassis spring mount socket.

Fitted to test with M10 x 50 bolts, but later changed them to M10 x 40 with washers and Nylocs. Bolted up and all looks OK .. Still to see what they’re like on track!!

Quite pleased, at a cost of 4 M10 x 40 Bolts … and a grinding disc!!

Like it but are they +5's? I spoke to a lot of people about mine and bought my stuff from gwyn Lewis, his challenge stuff hasn't failed me yet, the dislocation cone catches the spring,

I've seen a few running long travel with a standard type cone and had lots of trouble

There is a possibility that the brake line could catch, though the photo makes it look way worse than it is in reality, so I'm not too concerned. I can easily bend it further round out the way or just make another and route it better.

Yeah, +5's. Normally I would have bought re-locations with the hook, but couldn't afford them and these were basically given to me, so I tried them. They didn't work, hence the re-work.

With decent money available I'd have gone for slider relocation points, and given time that's what we're gonna look to making somehow .. :)

As with anything off-road, I could have thrown money at it, but I don't have money so most stuff is modified to work with stuff that can't be made .. like the shocks and trailing arms, I needed to buy them, but I try to make or modify stuff around the major pieces. I'd love to just buy and bolt-on .. it's always work in progress with Landrovers anyway .. ;)

Cheers. Might still need fettling 'cos the axle actually moves forward slightly at full extension, so it's possible that the springs might still come out!! Will have to see about that, so I'm gonna go play sometime in the week .. :)
 
I had cones on before but on the chassis, they weren't working with my new set up so I've just picked up some extreme 4x4 spring sliders for £40 and they work amazingly.

Thats a natral thing for a 4 link suspension setup like a LR rear end. It'l b fine as it will be on the same position when its on it was back into position.

Heh, I'd buy a couple of sets for that sort of money, where did you get them from, any more available??? ;)

top-cat has a set of Cor4 (I think) sliders, and they work really well.
