ATF in R380 Gearbox by dealer?

Hey guys!!

I just gave my TD5 defender for transfer box, differentials and gearbox oil change to the LR dealership in Pakistan. They have replaced transfer box oil with ZIC gear FF 75W 85, differentials oil with caltex EP 90 and changed main gearbox oil with caltex Texamatic ATF where as according to the owners manual it is suppose to have Texaco MTF94(whatever that is) in the gearbox.

My car was imported by me from Dubai where it was regularly serviced by a proper dealership using all the right oils including proper mtf in the gearbox.

I inquired about it and they said that this gearbox has an oil pump so it requires a very thin and thats why we use ATF. I told the supervisor that the manual says manual transmission fluid then how come you guys use ATF, he replied well thats what LR UK people told us to use.

So my question is... is it okay to use atf in R380?And have they used the right oils in transfer box and differentials, I am pretty sure the guys was BSing since I've had many bad experiences with this dealer.

The following oils are available here which one would be okay to use in R380 if not ATF?

1. 75w 85
2. 75w 90
3. EP 140
4. EP 90
And a few others including synthetics.

I believe that ATF was used some time ago but is not recommended by landrover anymore,The landrover recommended oil is MTF 94.Some 10w/40 engine oils meet the MTF 94 spec ,Like this one from Millers Oils.XSS 10w/40,

No you can't use engine oil, engine oil is a different ball game. All these oils serve different purposes, i.e. EP90 for example is an extreme pressure oil designed for hypoid gears.

Stick with the ATF, these gearboxes have an internal oil pump, that is why ATF was used as it's less viscous. LR did change to MTF but who says LR get things right?

ATF also allows for easier gearchanges, MTF can cause hesitant changes due to viscous drag on the syncros.

The old oil I tool out which was used by dealer in Dubai was no ATF... It was a bit thicker than ATF and I never had any problem with gear changed while it was being used.

I wonder which oil was that.

Out there it is probably hot enough that even a more viscous oil will be OK but the pump still won't be shooting it about the way it should be, the 3rd motion has oil being pumped through it to lubricate the sliding hubs, gear bearings etc, the ATF will easily pump through this system and lubricate it.

You dealer has done the oil change, I would leave the oil be to be honest and next time it needs changed you can do it your self and make up your own decision based on the information available. I am not going to try and make anyone use ATF in their gearbox if they want to use MTF, I don't care.

NOT engine or gear oil though, thats just silly. If you have had problems with that dealer before, why are you still taking it back there?

Well I dont have any issues with the ATF, I just wanna ensure that they used the right oil.

So no gear oil exists to use used in this gear box?

Has my dealer used the right oils in the diffs and transfer box? Which oils are recommended API GL-4 or API GL-5 in diffs and transfer box?

I put; API GL-4 transfer box, and API GL-5 in diffs

I use mtf-94 in my td5 because it is recomened and I could get it easy but if atf was all I could get then I would have no problems using it. EP-90 gl5 or ep- 80/90 gl5 in the diffs and ep-90 gl4 or ep-80/90gl4 in the transfer box. Thats just what I use and so far Iv had no trouble with the transmission.

Cant I use any other manual transmission fluid in the gearbox other than the MTF 94?

EP90 GL4 is OK for Transfer box and Diffs.
GL5 can be used in the Diffs, but not in the Transfer Box - it contains an additive that degrades phosphor bronze.
I just use GL4 for both - saves keeping 2 types of oil.

What is MTF94? What grade is it? like is it GL-4 or GL-5? What is its viscosity?

I dont know what viscosity mt-94 is its not written on the bottle. Landrover even have a part number for the 5 litre bottle stc 9157. I can tell you that its fairly light (thin) viscosity much lighter than ep 90

Yes, that's fine.

Don't worry, your gearbox will be OK with ATF in it.
