Popping noise from air intake plus no power

had an diesel 2.286 engine rebuilt a couple of year ago and and lately is started sounding very rough as if it was missing.
Did all the usual checks and ended up having to take the head off to have a look.
I re-sat all the valves, fitted new valve caps new gasket and put all back together.
It ran for the first time to-day since the overhaul and all seemed fine so headed out the road for a spin.
The first thing I noticed was a lack of power and then things didnt sound right so I pulled in for a look.
There was a awfull racked coming from the air intake like a loud poping sound.
Well I managed to get home and had a another look,checked the tappets, a couple were tighish so adjusted them but still no better.
Any ideas.
 
Completely off topic but where abouts are you? ill be in the city the weekend after easter. Lovely place

Just may be the popping is a valve being shut by compression. maybe the stem is tight or maybe bent.
 
The popping sound is a valve being closed by compression. A stem could be tight or bent. would also explain loss of power.

I thing you could be right.
I slackened off number 1 injector feed pipe and the popping sound reduced only getting loud if I gave it trottle.
Ill have a go again tomorrow after work

Sorted!
Turned out to be a weak valve spring on no. one valve not allowing the valve to close properly
I had noticed that the split collets were sitting 1mm or so lower than the rest so with rockers removed I pushed it down and it felt weaker than the others.
I pressurized the cylinder with a modified heater plug to hold the valve closed and changed the spring.
The rockers were fairly worn so replaced them while I was at it
The popping noise is gone!!!!!!
seems to have been from the valve not closing fully.
