1975 lwb ex mod Landrover

I've just bought my first Landrover.
I have the strange army 6 position switch on an extra mounting in the
centre of the dash. I think I've worked out that moving one position to
the left turns the tail lights on, again to the left does tails and side
lights and finally 3 positions to the left does the tails, sides and
headlights.
But one position to the right does tails (why if ti can be done towards
the left?) second position towards the right does tails and sides (why?)
and finally third position to the right turns on the little convoy light
under the rear cross member and leaves the dash board lights on.
There is a separate switch on the side of this console that seems to
shut all the lights off including the dash lights (why when it could be
done using the main switch? Faster if the enemy is spotted??). There is
another switch on the original dash above the heater switch that shuts
off the dashboard lights alone.
There is yet another square flat black switch on the centre console that
has a red light on it that says test; what does it do?
On the original dash there is an orange light in the top left hand
corner; again what does it do?
Is the wiring code different on military Landrovers and if so where can
I find out what it is (if at all)
This Landrover is also equipped with an oil cooler. Were all MoD
Landrovers fitted with an oil cooler or was it only for vehicles going
to hot countries.
Finally! Is it possible to find out any of its history using any serial
numbers.

I used to have an ex-SAS Range Rover that had been retro-fitted with a
similar switch. This was a security switch, with a tab over it which meant
you couldn't switch it on or off accidentally, and it cut all the lights,
including courtesy lights. I was told it was for "covert operations". It's
fine to have all the lights and dash lights off when you're on an obbo, but
if you open the door and the interior light comes on...... Not sure how
this relates to a Lightweight, mind.

Join EMLRA, and they will do a search for you for a couple of quid.
Membership worth it for that alone.

Erm, military 6-position switches have six positions, not seven. There
are three in one directon, for normal use: usually HS&T, S&T, T, Off
is in the centre, and two positions in the other direction, Convoy,
Convoy+Side. Under the convoy setting, the brake lights should become
inoperable as well.

I have not heard of this, but usually switching to Convoy will
extinguish most interior lights. Certainly with a Map light & interior
light these go out when Convoy or Convoy+S is selected.

This is for the brakes. You have dual-line brakes, which have a
failover valve in them. Should one of the circuits fail, the red light
will come on. Some vehicles have a servo fail switch as well, so the
light will come on when there is no servo brake assistance.

The test button is so that you can check that the red light does in
fact work - a blown bulb will obviously never light up to tell you the
brakes have failed.

No idea!

If the vehicle is 12v, then a lot of the wiring will be standard
landrover colour codes, additional military wiring may be different.
24v FFR models can be very different, youy best bet is Ex-Military
Landrover Association, who should be able to furnish you with the
correct wiring diagrams.

If you mean the long adjustbale one, it's the same as the other bolts
that hold the swivel seals on. 1/4" UNF. It should but up against a
little stub of metal bolted under one of the bolts that hold the
swivel onto the axle

Tests the bulb in the switch!

If the buld lights on it's own, it's because the balance of the
hydraulic fluid has gone (a cylinder or pipe failed) - so it's actually
a brake warning light, and the switch part is to test the bulb.

Infra-Red switch? My lightweight has one, which cuts eveyting except
the headlights. Those would be fitted with infra-red filters, and the
driver would wear special goggles which converted IR to visible light.
I've occasionally seen them on sale as single goggles -- they need to be
a matched pair.

On mine, the IR switch got re-wired at some point.

Its not a lightweight, Courtesy lights? None of them either :)

I believe the passenger/co-pilot would wear the IR and would direct
the driver. Given the tunnel vision effect of IR goggles I would
expect it to be impossible to drive with them on

Its definitely 12v now.
Any clues to tell if it was ever 24v?

Think that might have been standard on all series vehicles at some
time?

Might be for when a trailer is added, it will flash once when you
indicate so you know the trailer indicators are working. I forget what
the colour was but know that feature exists.
